Highway Patrol Officer in critical condition after being driven off the freeway by suspect in 100 mph pursuit

NASSAU COUNTY, NY - A New York State Highway Patrol Officer Brendon Gallagher was critically injured in the line of duty when his patrol vehicle was struck by a speeding Ford Mustang driven by 29-year-old Cody Fisher, who was allegedly impaired by drugs. Fisher, of Brentwood, NY was arrested after he sideswiped Gallagher’s patrol vehicle, driving it off the Long Island Expressway on Sunday according to police.

Reporting from Fox News indicated that Fisher is now facing a multitude of charges ranging from second-degree assault, second-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle and reckless driving, as well as driving while ability impaired by drugs.

According to Suffolk County Police, Officer Gallagher was conducting a routine traffic stop at approximately 6:00 p.m. local time Sunday when a 2021 Ford Mustang passed him at high speed. Responding to the vehicle’s excessive speeding Gallagher, a member of the Highway Patrol’s Street Takeover Task Force gave pursuit engaging his lights and sirens and attempting to pull over the Mustang.

The driver of the Mustang, identified as Fisher reportedly lost control of his vehicle and sideswiped Gallagher’s patrol vehicle. The impact drove the patrol car off the freeway causing it to violently flip over. The suspect’s vehicle also left the roadway striking a light post.
A passing off-duty Police Officer from Nassau County stopped to assist Gallagher and ultimately arrested Fisher.

Suffolk PBA President Lou Civello told reporters in a press conference that Suffolk County Police Officer Denis O’Connor was injured as well while climbing into the twisted wreckage of the police cruiser to apply tourniquets to Gallagher.

In the press conference on January 6, Suffolk PBA President Lou Civello told reporters, “New York State has failed this officer who is now fighting for his life in this hospital. It’s failed every officer out there risking their lives. You shouldn’t have to almost kill a police officer for us to be able to hold you on bail!”

Civello blasted state legislators for undermining law enforcement’s ability to hold such offenders on bail adding, “These laws have no teeth. The very laws that we risk our lives to uphold and enforce are undermining us. We renew our call to the state legislature, to the Assembly, to the Senate: DO. YOUR. JOB. We need laws that act as a deterrent. Ninety-five to a hundred miles an hour and we can’t hold you on bail unless you almost kill one of us. It’s a disgrace.

We need to be able to seize these vehicles, these instruments of terror, that are out there putting your families at risk putting our officers at risk.
We should be taking these things and crushing them. That only gets done when we get rational laws passed in this state.”

Commissioner Robert Waring told ABC7, "The nature of his injuries are so severe, they're typically considered not survivable. So the fact that he is still here with us is nothing short of a miracle.”

Waring added, "The damage to the police vehicle was so significant it took emergency services officers over 30 minutes to extricate him from the vehicle.”

Fisher was arranged on Monday and pleaded not guilty. He is being held on $1 million cash bail.

Yes, seize and crush if not worth selling. Otherwise, seize and sell, with profits going as additional funds for the police. If an officer is injured, to the officer/family.

This country has become dead to feeling any kind of empathy. Our PO risk their lives and the public expect this and if a casualty does happen they don't even blink, consider it just another day. Any wonder there is early retirements and low recruits.
