In a move that stunned law enforcement supporters and drew outrage from conservatives, New York Governor Kathy Hochul swiftly dropped all charges against far-left NYC Comptroller Brad Lander after his arrest for allegedly assaulting ICE agents outside immigration court.
The arrest came during yet another stunt by Lander as he attempted to block federal agents from detaining an illegal immigrant.
Rather than defend the rule of law, Hochul used the moment to virtue signal, standing arm-in-arm with Lander and blasting the arrest as “bulls–t.”
She even bragged about $50 million in state funding for legal services for migrants — a number that was both misleading and already baked into the state budget.
In reality, the budget allocates over $64 million. Meanwhile, progressives like Lander have been pushing for more than double that amount, to the tune of $134 million, effectively demanding taxpayer-funded legal teams for people here illegally.
ICE officials allege that Lander interfered with a lawful federal operation, laying hands on agents and obstructing justice.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin confirmed that Lander was arrested for “assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer,” pointing out a disturbing 413% increase in assaults on ICE personnel.
Yet in Hochul’s New York, it seems leftist politicians are free to manhandle federal agents and walk out with a press conference instead of handcuffs.
This fits a disturbing pattern under Hochul’s leadership: one that prioritizes optics over order. Recall how earlier this year, she deployed National Guard troops to state prisons amid an “illegal” correctional officers’ strike.
When the men and women keeping our prisons in check raised concerns, Hochul threatened them with discipline and brought in untrained personnel to do their jobs, including parole officers and National Guard troops with no correctional experience.
It’s a jarring contrast. Violent inmates in failing prisons? Hochul gets tough. Leftist activist arrested for obstructing ICE? She calls in a photo op and cuts the charges.
This isn’t the first time Hochul’s policies have emboldened chaos.
As covered previously, her soft-on-crime approach has helped fuel record-high violence in New York’s prisons, prompting upstate Republicans to brand it the “Hochul Prison Crisis.”
Despite soaring assaults on correction officers and understaffed facilities, her administration continues to side with activists over accountability.
It’s the same pattern with immigration. Instead of working to support ICE and secure communities, Hochul is throwing taxpayer money at activists who interfere with lawful enforcement actions.
