BRIDGEPORT, CT- Best wishes to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as they attempt to gain custody of an illegal alien who killed an off-duty Bridgeport, Connecticut police officer and his longtime girlfriend last month in the sanctuary state mecca of Connecticut.
Fox News Digital reports that ICE has lodged a detainer against the illegal alien suspect who killed Bridgeport police officer Cooper Whiteside, 38, and his girlfriend Brittany Islami, 34, in a head-on crash while she was operating intoxicated. Melissa Esperanza Ramirez-Romero, 27, of Stamford, Connecticut, was arrested by Danbury, Connecticut police after the crash that took the lives of Whiteside and Islami.
She is charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle while intoxicated, operating under the influence, traveling unreasonably fast, and failure to drive in the proper lane.
Police allege that Ramirez-Romero was drunk on July 13 at approx. 2:45 a.m. when the Jeep Compass she was driving collided head-on with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by Whiteside, with Islami as a passenger.
Responding officers found the couple dead at the scene. Ramirez-Romero was transported to Danbury Hospital with serious injuries.
According to the warrant in support of her arrest, it was determined that Ramirez-Romero’s blood alcohol content was .14%, nearly twice the legal limit, and also tested positive for cannabis.
Whiteside had a lifelong dream of becoming a police officer since he was a young boy, and the Danbury native achieved that dream, graduating third in his police academy class. He served the Bridgeport Police Department with distinction for two years.
The day after the crash, his fellow officers mourned him and the department wrote that Whiteside “served with selfless dedication” and extended its condolences to his family and loved ones, as well as his brother and sister police officers.
“Rest easy, brother,” the agency wrote. “We’ll take it from here.”
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed to Fox News Digital that an immigration detainer has been filed against Ramirez-Romero asking state officials not to release her if she is freed from custody.
The likelihood of sanctuary state Connecticut honoring that request is probably slim and none, since political leaders in the state have thrown down with criminal illegal aliens while excoriating those who are trying to rid the country of illegal aliens permitted to invade the country during the four years of the Biden administration.
“Melissa Esperanza Ramirez-Romero is a criminal illegal alien with charges for Vehicular Manslaughter and DUI. On July 26, 2026, ICE lodged a detainer against her,” a DHS spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
In a post on X, DHS wrote that “an illegal alien KILLED A COP in Danbury, Connecticut,” while urging Connecticut’s “sanctuary politicians" to cooperate with ICE and make sure Ramirez-Romero is not released back into the community.
