Guatemalan illegal immigrant arrested for sexually assaulting a child in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, RI - A press release from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirms that Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston officials have apprehended a Guatemalan illegal immigrant who had been released into the United States nearly a decade ago on charges of sexually assaulting a child.

According to Breitbart, the illegal immigrant first arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in August 2016 and was apprehended near Antelope Wells, New Mexico. After being apprehended, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) gave him a Notice to Appear (NTA) scheduled for a later date before a federal immigration judge.

Deportation officers from ERO Boston arrested the 25-year-old Guatemalan illegal immigrant during a targeted enforcement operation on July 22nd, in Providence, Rhode Island. Two years prior, the Providence Police Department (PPD) arrested the illegal immigrant on February 10, 2022, and charged him with first-degree child molestation sexual assault.

The Providence/Bristol Superior Court issued a warrant for the illegal immigrant's arrest on July 16, 2024. Later that day, the man turned himself into the court. The illegal immigrant was also allowed to post bail the same day he turned himself in. He now is in ICE custody pending the outcome of the child sex assault case against him and his subsequent deportation.

In a statement, ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons said, "This Guatemalan noncitizen will have his day in court, but he stands accused of some serious and distributing crimes. We owe it to the children of our communities to apprehend and remove noncitizen sex offenders from their neighborhoods. ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety in order to keep such criminals away from our New England residents."

This is not the first incident where an illegal immigrant from Guatemala has been taken into custody by ICE for child sexual assault charges in the state of Rhode Island. According to WPRL, back in May, a Guatemalan illegal immigrant previously convicted of child molestation and sexual assault was taken into custody ICE deportation officers.

The man, who is 55-years-old was arrested on April 17th in Providence. ICE said that the man illegally entered the U.S. without inspection back in 2008 and remained in the country without proper authorization ever since. ERO Boston first lodged a detainer against the man back in August 2018, shortly after he was arrested and charged with first-degree child molestation and sexual assault.

In December 2022, he was convicted on those charges and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He sentence was reportedly later reduced to six years with the remaining 19 suspended. He will now remain in ICE custody pending a future hearing before an immigration judge. In a statement, Lyons said, "This unlawfully present Guatemalan national has been convicted of sex crimes against a minor. He has already violated U.S. immigration laws and we will not allow him back out into our Rhode Island neighborhoods to re-offend."

He added, "ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by apprehending and removing the most egregious offenders in order to make our New England communities safer."
