Illinois state trooper killed in crash by person who has been cited for having no license

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL - Authorities with the Illinois State Police (ISP) announced that one of their troopers was killed in a downstate crash on Friday, October 18th. According to ABC7, the deceased state trooper has been identified as ISP Trooper Corey S. Thompsen.

ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly said that the crash happened in Champaign County around 3:45 p.m. Kelly said that Trooper Thompsen was on-duty finishing a traffic enforcement detail, driving a motorcycle eastbound on East Leverett Road, approaching 1300 E. A truck was traveling southbound on County Road 1300 E. and stopped at the intersection with Leverett Road. The truck's 32-year-old driver, identified as Helen Torres, then pulled into the roadway, striking Thompsen's motorcycle.

A witness provided aid until first responders arrived on scene and transported Thompsen to a local hospital where he later died. Thompsen was 28-years-old and served for almost five years with ISP. He was assigned to the Special Operations Group Fatal Four Team. He is survived by his wife Chelsea, mother Susan, father Steve, and brothers. The details of the crash are still under investigation.

The death of Trooper Thompsen is being investigated by the Champaign County Coroner's Office, Champaign County Sheriff's Office, and the ISP. Champaign County Coroner Steve Thuney said, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Trooper Thompsen and the Illinois State Police family while they work through this tragedy."

Kelly said in a statement, "This is a sad moment. We are hurting. Corey's brothers and sisters in motor enforcement, Special Operations Group, Troop 7, patrol, the Zone, Vermilion Metropolitan Enforcement Group, and across ISP are hurting.

Corey's family is hurting badly today. This is the first, and I hope the last, trooper who I personally administered the oath of an ISP officer to that I've lost in a line of duty death. The first and I hope the last Trooper who I've seen at the beginning of their watch and at the end of their watch. I ask for your thoughts, your love, and your prayers and good will for his family and his Illinois State Police family."

The driver of the truck was also transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Torres has been cited for failure to yield right of way at a stop intersection and no valid driver's license — expired less than one year. CBS news reported that before this crash, ISP said that 19 troopers were involved in crashes so far this year, but none of those were fatal.
