JEFFERSONVILLE, IN – The Jeffersonville Police Department (JPD) out of Indiana is reportedly taking advantage of a new training simulator acquired by the department through a federal grant, which department officials say the novel technology will hopefully “reduce risk and increase confidence” regarding various situations requiring officers’ response.
JPD officials are understandably pleased with the newly-obtained 180 Simulator, a training tool which affords officers an opportunity to run through a variety of different scenarios that would prompt a police response.
While the JPD has had similar training simulators in the past, officials emphasize this new one affords officers literally thousands of different scenarios alongside the ability for multiple officers to use the simulator at once.
Corporal Thomas Lawson from the department said of the new training simulator, “We might have a one-officer response, a two-officer response, or a three-officer response...just being very creative with what we throw at them. The big thing is reduce risk and increase confidence...that’s the best thing we can do for our department.”
The 180 Simulator reportedly comes equipped with a mock firearm modeled in the same style as the officers’ service weapon, affording officers the most authentic experience for simulated scenarios. Additionally, the simulator offers variable weather scenarios alongside dedicated marksmanship courses.
“We can have officers in here practicing marksmanship, decision making in here for free, in a weather environment that’s not snowing, raining...so they feel comfortable with the weapon system, and then take them to the range,” Corporal Darren Broady stated.
According to Corporal Lawson, the 180 Simulator is a tool that not only benefits the rank-and-file of the department but is also a means of better ensuring public safety. “It just makes you an overall better…better officer, and it’s not just for us, too, it’s for the public. That’s what we’re here for,” Corporal Lawson noted.
