INDIANAPOLIS, IN - A police officer in Indianapolis was struck by a suspect’s car Thursday, leading a second officer to shoot the suspect driver according to the IMPD. Police were called to perform a welfare check on a person found inside a vehicle parked near a CVS store when the suspect reportedly struck an officer with their vehicle.
As reported by Fox59, Officer William Young of the IMPD told reporters that officers responding to the welfare check request found a male unresponsive inside the vehicle near the CVS Pharmacy Drive-thru. According to the outlet, the officer reaching the vehicle knocked on the window several times and activated their sirens and lights attempting to prompt the driver to respond.
It took about four minutes for the driver to lower the window and answer the officers.
In a press release, the IMPD described the interaction between officers and the initially unresponsive man. The officers reportedly asked the man if he was okay. The suspect emerged from the vehicle after being ordered to do so and the second officer near the driver’s side door asked him to move toward the rear of the vehicle.
“The suspect did not listen to the officers and then got back into his car while the driver door was still open," the release said. "The officer, near the driver side of the car, then grabbed suspect’s arm and told him to get out of car.”
The situation then escalated quickly when the suspect threw the vehicle into reverse pinning the officer nearest the driver’s side door against the building. The other officer drew his service weapon and fired on the suspect striking him at least once. The suspect then began to comply with officers yelled commands and exited the vehicle where the officers handcuffed him and applied a tourniquet to a gunshot wound to his arm.
EMS was already on the scene due to the welfare check and assisted the stricken officer. The injured officer and suspect were both transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Investigations will be carried out by The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team as well as IMPD Internal Affairs. The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will also conduct a mandatory hearing according to the Department.
Fox59 reported that the officer who fired his weapon was placed on administrative leave under standard procedure following any officer-involved shooting. The injured officer was released from the hospital on Thursday evening. IMPD Police Chief Chris Bailey told the outlet, “We ask that you continue to keep this officer and all our officers in your thoughts as they work to keep our city safe.”
