In a gripping conversation on the "Sheepdog and Shepherd" show, Giovanni Rocco, a former FBI undercover agent, recounts his extraordinary transformation from a troubled youth in New Jersey to infiltrating America's most violent mafia family. His story is not only about law enforcement but also about faith, identity, and redemption.

Giovanni Rocco grew up amid criminal elements in New Jersey. With a tumultuous youth marked by brushes with the law, he expected to end up dead or in jail by age 25. Surprisingly, Rocco pivoted to law enforcement in 1990, igniting a 27-year career that spanned narcotics, DEA work, and finally, covert operations with the FBI.

Rocco is best known for infiltrating the DeCavalcante crime family—believed to be the inspiration for the TV show "The Sopranos." These mobsters were notorious for their violence and were considered the "cowboys" of organized crime. Giovanni adopted the alias Giovanni Gatto and became a trusted associate in the criminal underworld.  Rocco’s undercover work demanded intense psychological resilience.

He lived dual lives, separating his undercover personality from his family man identity with symbolic gestures, like removing a government-issued diamond ring before entering his home. He faced immense emotional tolls and isolation, especially after his forced retirement and relocation.

After years of emotional strain, including the loss of his brother to suicide, Rocco found solace and purpose through renewed faith. He now advocates for mental health support among first responders and veterans, turning his painful past into a mission of healing and inspiration.

Today, Giovanni speaks across the country, shares his experiences through his book Giovanni's Ring: My Life Inside the Real Sopranos, and supports recovery and mental health programs. His message is clear: identity isn't defined by a job but by one's values and faith.

Giovanni Rocco’s life is a testament to resilience and the power of faith to transform and guide even the most tumultuous lives.
