NEW YORK CITY, NY- Frank Tammaro, a decorated 95-year-old veteran of the Korean War, is one of the latest victims in the open border policies of the Biden administration.
As cities such as New York and others struggle to find housing for the tens of thousands of illegal aliens crossing into the country and in turn their cities, heroes such as Tammaro have become collateral damage.
The Daily Signal reports that Tammaro was given less than two months notice that he would be evicted from a nursing home in the Big Apple to provide housing for illegal aliens in a deal struck between the nursing home owner and the city.
At a news conference, Tammaro told reporters he thought his suitcases would be dumped at the curb.
Tammaro, an Army veteran, said:
“I thought my suitcases were going to be on the curb because I’m not that fast,”
He went on to say:
“If it wasn’t for my daughter, they would’ve been on the curb.”
Like other cities and towns across the country, New York City has seen an unprecedented surge of illegal immigrants entering their jurisdictions. In the case of New York, over 101,200 “refugees” have arrived in the city in the 16 months between April 2022 and August 13, 2023, according to city officials. Some 58,000 illegals remain in city shelters.
Tammaro was joined at the press conference by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) in Staten Island, where the congresswoman was discussing the deal between the city and Homes for the Homeless to take over the nursing home, Island Shores Senior Residence.
According to a video and press release dispatched from Malliotakis’s office, Tammaro told reporters:
“The thing I’m annoyed about is how they did it; it was very disgraceful what they did to the people in Island Shores,”
According to ToddStarnes.com, Tammaro said they were given little notice.
He said:
“Then, one day, there was a notice on the board. I think that gave us a month and a half to find out where we were going to go,”
He went on to say:
“I said, ‘No, no, no, no…you’re not moving me,’ and they said, ‘Yes, yes, yes, we are,”
He added:
“Everything was done behind closed doors—we didn’t have a chance to actually make any attempt to stop them because there wasn’t enough time.”
American Military News said New York City Councilman David Carr confirmed the change. The facility’s online record now lists the facility as “permanently closed,” Fox News reported.
Removing Tammaro and other seniors, including veterans, from the facility did not sit well with Malliotakis.
Malliotakis said:
“Our tax dollars as citizens of New York should not be utilized to house citizens of other countries, especially at the expense of our senior citizens and veterans who put their lives on the line, paid taxes their whole lives, and built our communities.”
While New York City Mayor Eric Adams has blamed red state governors such as Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) and Greg Abbott (R-Texas), the unprecedented surge at the southern border has accelerated the influx of illegals into cities such as New York, which, along with others such as Chicago and Los Angeles tout themselves as “sanctuary cities.”
Upon hearing Homes for the Homeless was attempting to sell Island Shores, both Malliotakis and Carr reached out to see if they could locate a “suitable buyer” to maintain the facility as an assisted living location.
However, Carr, a Staten Island Republican, said the organization “refused to have even an exploratory conversation” regarding the sale of the facility.
The Daily Signal contacted Homes for the Homeless for comment, but none was received.
