Laurens County, SC: The unfortunate reality of life is that tragedies happen, sometimes to the most innocent among us - our children. No parent ever imagines that the child they tuck into bed at night, celebrate birthdays with, and dream of watching them grow up could suddenly be taken from them.
For many law enforcement officers, the journey into the profession is accompanied by another dream. They begin their careers, establish themselves, meet someone special, settle down, and start families of their own. They dedicate their professional lives to protecting others while building a home filled with love and memories.
But whether someone wears a badge or works outside law enforcement, no family is immune to tragedy.
For the family of little Maddie Hines, that unimaginable heartbreak became reality in October 2023.
Maddie was killed in a car accident just days before her fourth birthday after an illegal immigrant ran multiple stop signs and crashed into their family’s vehicle.
Like so many children her age, Maddie had dreams of her own. One was getting a "big girl bike” and her grandparents had already picked one out for her upcoming birthday.
Tragically, Maddie never got the opportunity to ride it.
Rather than allowing their grief to define their daughter's legacy, Maddie's family chose to transform their heartbreak into something extraordinary, all possible because of their connection to God.
“Without that relationship we would not be able to stand, keep going, get out of bed or function. He is our strength…” their website wrote.
They started the Love Like Maddie Foundation, an organization dedicated to spreading kindness and bringing happiness to children in their daughter's memory.
Now, through a partnership with their local sheriff's office, the foundation hopes to make Christmas a little brighter for dozens of children who might otherwise go without.
When Law Enforcement and Communities Come Together
Each Christmas, the sheriff's office assists approximately 200 families in fulfilling children's holiday wish lists. According to the foundation, at least 70 bicycles are requested annually.
Recognizing an opportunity to honor Maddie while helping families in need, the foundation launched a fundraising campaign with an initial goal of purchasing 75 bicycles.
At approximately $100 per bicycle, the campaign hopes to raise $7,500.
But here at Law Enforcement Today, we believe America can do better than simply meeting that goal.
We want to triple it!
Imagine all those children waking up on Christmas morning to discover a brand-new bicycle waiting for them. Imagine the excitement, the smiles, and the memories those children will carry for years.
A fundraising effort could make that possible.
And imagine what it would mean to Maddie's family to know their little girl's memory continues bringing happiness to children she never had the opportunity to meet.
A Partnership America Needs More Of
At a time when public discussions surrounding law enforcement frequently focus on controversy, division, and distrust, stories like this deserve national attention.
Police officers and sheriff's deputies are more than uniforms and badges. They are parents, neighbors, coaches, volunteers, and members of the communities they serve.
This partnership represents something our country desperately needs more of: law enforcement agencies and everyday citizens working side by side toward a common purpose.
Such cooperation strengthens community relationships, builds trust, improves public perceptions of policing, and, most importantly, makes a meaningful difference in people's lives. And in this case, the beneficiaries are children.
No political disagreement, cultural divide, or personal difference should stand in the way of helping a child experience the joy of Christmas.
We're asking Law Enforcement Today's readers, supporters, and the broader law enforcement community to step up in honor of Maddie.
Whether you can contribute $5, $25, $100, or more, every donation brings another child closer to an unforgettable Christmas morning.
We encourage police departments, sheriff's offices, police unions, veterans organizations, businesses, and community groups across America to join this effort.
Let's honor Maddie's memory, support this remarkable family, and remind America what happens when law enforcement and the communities they protect come together.
