Maine man who fired at police and his mother arrested after six-hour standoff

NORTH BERWICK, ME - Adian Scott, 23, and his mother Churi, 45, of North Berwick were taken into custody after a standoff lasting several hours on Tuesday after the man opened fire on police officers responding to a call for a protective order violation which stemmed from a harassment charge and possible weapons fire.

According to a press release posted to social media by the North Berwick Police Department (NBPD), officer responded to a reported protective order violation at a residence at approximately 10:00 a.m. and were fired upon as they arrived. The responding officers took cover and called for additional units to assist.

Chief Stephen Peasley told NEWS CENTER Maine that the officers began taking fire as they walked up the driveway. The officers were not injured.

“As we walked about the driveway, there were gunshots that came from the residence in our direction,” Peasley told WABI-TV. “We retreated and held our position.”

The Southern Maine Special Response Team and Cumberland County Emergency Services responded to reinforce NBPD and surrounded the residence beginning the six-hour standoff in earnest. By the end of the ordeal, at least ten agencies including North Berwick Fire and Rescue, Berwick Police, South Berwick Police, Eliot Police, Sanford Police, the Maine State Police, and the York County Emergency Management Agency would respond to support the North Berwick PD.

“Over the next six hours, negotiators would work with both Scott and his mother in an attempt to have them exit the residence,” the release explained.

North Berwick Police obtained an arrest warrant for Adrian for “violation of protective order, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and creating a police standoff,” and commenced negotiations. During the standoff drivers in the area were instructed to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

“We’ve made contact by telephone and talked to the subject,” Peasley continued. “He’s resistant to coming out. He’s just refusing to come out.”

Although negotiators attempted to convince Scott and his mother to exit the home the suspects refused to comply and both CS and OC gas were deployed into the home.

Churi exited the home first and was taken into custody. Chief Peasley told reporters that she was apparently not in the home against her will  “(Emergency medical technicians) and paramedics have been checking her out to make sure she was fine,” Peaseley said according to WABI. “They’re going to debrief her and find out what she knows.”

Approximately one hour later Adian exited and was also placed under arrest. Churi Scott was charged with creating a police standoff and hindering apprehension or prosecution.
