NEW YORK CITY, NY - Authorities with the New York Police Department (NYPD) announced that they are looking for a man whom they believe sexually abused a corpse while on the subway.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday, April 9th just after midnight aboard a southbound R train in the vicinity of the Whitehall Street station in Lower Manhattan. The victim boarded the train around 8:00 p.m. and the suspect got on the subway at Whitehall Street station around 11:00 p.m.
ABC7 reported that the victim appeared to have died prior to the alleged assault; his death is believed to have been natural. A law enforcement source said that the suspect searched the dead man's pockets before sexually assaulting him.
In a press release, the NYPD said, "The unidentified individuals had sexual contact with an unconscious and unresponsive adult male." The suspect then fled on foot. Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for the man who was last seen wearing a blue baseball cap, black hooded jacket, a yellow hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, red and white sneakers, and carrying a black backpack.
According to the New York Post, police do not believe that the male suspect and the victim knew each other. The person of interest identified by police is addicted to heroin, according to his brother. His brother told The Post that his troubled sibling has been staying with him since he was released from prison a few months ago.
He had been locked up for "a while," though his brother couldn't remember if it was for robbery or assault. The brother said, "I haven't seen him in a few days. He started staying out late. He has never done anything like this in his life, not what they said he did. I don't think that he did that. He's not that type of person."
The brother added, "They said he took his thing out and put it in the guy's ... yeah I don't think he did that he's not a pervert." The brother said that the allegations against the suspect, who is one of seven siblings, has left the family in "shock" and "mad." The brother said, "They're saying the police need to do a better investigation because my brother is not like that. No matter how bad the heroin addiction is, he's not like that."
In another press release, the NYPD said that a different person, a woman, is suspected of stealing property from the dead man before fleeing a little over an hour before the alleged sexual assault. The woman was last seen wearing a yellow hoodie, black pants, and a black baseball cap. Sources said the woman allegedly handed the deceased victim a cigarette of some kind before he died.
The investigation remains ongoing.
