LOS ANGELES, CA - For an entire month, a convicted murderer who was sentenced to life in a mental health facility for a brutal killing back in 2009, is back in custody after police arrested him for escaping the facility and being on the run.

According to the Mercury News, 41-year-old Michael Villalobos became a wanted man on August 21st, after escaping a mental health facility in Los Angeles. On September 23rd, he was arrested by Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies. He has since been extradited to Contra Costa County where prosecutors will try for a second time to convince a judge to keep Villalobos in a locked facility. Back in May, prosecutors brought the same concerns to a judge, but failed at getting Villalobos to be sentenced to a more secure type of facility.

In May, Contra Costa Superior Court Judge Julia Campins denied a prosecution motion to move him from the facility he was at to the Napa State Hospital, which is a locked facility that routinely holds incarcerated people who suffer from severe mental illness.

Back in 2009, Villalobos randomly attacked an elderly man, beating him to death as the two passed each other on a sidewalk. At the time, police said that the two did not know each other and that the murder had no apparent motive. Villalobos later pleaded guilty to second degree murder, but in a plea deal with prosecutors, was found not guilty by reason of insanity. He was sentenced to a mental health facility rather than a prison.

At the time of his sentencing, prosecutors warned the judge that Villalobos becomes dangerous to others when he is not medicated and that prior to the murder incident, he had multiple assault convictions.

Over the last 18 years, Villalobos spent time in various mental health facilities, with the most recent one based in a neighborhood on Hover Street in Los Angeles. The Contra Costa District Attorney's office is renewing its motion to get Villalobos sentenced to a secure facility in light of his alleged escape attempt.

According to reports, Villalobos was 21-years-old when he murdered 79-year-old Euvaldo Sisneros. At the time, police said he jumped Sisneros from behind, beat him up, and kicked him in the head as the elderly man laid on the ground. After the incident, Sgt. Bisa French said, "It was just brutal. It's one of the worst crimes I've seen in a long time. He gave him one final big kick to the head and the victim was already down."
