Man shoots two-year-old girl during a DoorDash delivery because of road rage

DALLAS, TX - During the evening hours on Sunday, August 25th, police responded to the 8500 block of Sweetwater Drive on reports of shots being fired. Upon arriving on scene, police found a two-year girl with gunshot wounds.

According to WFAA, officials said that preliminary investigations show that a family was delivering DoorDash when the driver almost hit a motorcycle that had a side car. The driver of the car and the biker reportedly pulled over and exchanged words. When the family started to drive away, the motorcyclist followed and began shooting at the vehicle.

The family immediately pulled over, realizing that their daughter had been shot. Thankfully, the two-year-old is in stable condition and being treated for her injuries at a local hospital. According to the police affidavit, the bullet entered the girl's abdomen, bounced off one of her ribs, and came to rest in her diaphragm. Medical staff determined that the bullet would have to stay where it is because removing it may cause more harm to the little girl.

The suspect, identified by police as 50-year-old Jason Cain, who lives in the area where the DoorDash delivery was intended for. Police said that upon searching Cain's residence, they found "many satanic and Nazi symbols," as well as several automatic weapons, and a handgun. Cain has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated assault with serious bodily injury.

Claire Franklin, who lives next door to Cain, said that the street she lives on is a "quiet street." While police were searching Cain's home, she said, "I mean, everything was going on literally, I mean, 20 feet away. They had the garage open and had it all. A lot of policemen milling around, and they were going in and out of the garage." After hearing about the little girl who was shot, Franklin added, "It's shocking, you know, it's tragic. I hope she's going to be okay."

Franklin said, "I'm completely blown away that it happened here and having anything to do with my neighbors. I'm just shocked. They're, they're great. He gets on his Harley and takes his dog in the side car, and they go for like, little, you know, cruises around the block." She added, "Something like this is not just unusual, but you wouldn't ever believe it really even happened."

The noises from the gun forced neighbor Jessica Huseman to step outside of her home. She said, "I got over to the car and it whipped around and then stopped next to me. And the mom, I assume, jumped out of the passenger side and said, 'They shot my baby! They shot my baby!" Huseman looked and saw the little girl in the backseat covered in blood. She told the family to go straight to the hospital while she called 911.

Huseman said, "The way that mom's voice sounded really just ... is all I can think about. And they way that that little baby ... she just wasn't moving, wasn't crying, and I really thought she was gone." The arrest documents state that multiple witnesses told police they saw a motorcycle with a sidecar that had a dog in it following a gray sedan. They said that they saw the motorcyclist pull out a handgun and fire two shots.

Police said that witnesses identified Cain as the shooter. However, before witness identified him, police said Cain spoke to officers near the scene, telling them at the "drug dealers that were involved in the shooting were down the street." Huseman said she heard the same story from Cain. She said, "He said, 'Oh yeah, that was me on the motorcycle, but I don't think I saw anything.' And then he told me that there were 'drug dealers' that live on the next street, and I think he was attempting to imply that they had done it."

Detectives interviewed the family of the little girl. They said they were delivering a DoorDash order when they saw Cain in the middle of the street without his lights on. They swerved to avoid him and the two honked at each other. The family told police that Cain proceeded to follow their car around the neighborhood and shout at them. Huseman said, "I didn't assume that one of my neighbors had shot a baby."

Police documents show that when officers arrested Cain at his house, he resisted at first, but ultimately complied. Police said that they have also obtained video of the shooting. Huseman said, "I hope that they do get the justice that they need because that was horrific. That was really horrific."

As of this writing, Cain remains at the Dallas County Jail. His bond has not yet been set.
