Man who fired nine shots at police officers held on $800,000 bond

RALEIGH, N.C. — Dontezs Sharirh Whitley-Taylor, 30 years old, is facing several charges after discharging his weapon Thursday night around 10:49 p.m. near two police officers in Raleigh, North Carolina.

No injuries were reported. 

Raleigh police arrested a man after they say he shot at two officers from his car Thursday night.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, the two officers were parked in a marked patrol car at the corner of Haywood and Martin streets. Police said the driver of a white car pulled up to the intersection and fired a gun nine times from the driver's side window. One officer fired back.

Communication was exchanged over the radio with emergency responders, detailing the frantic scene unfolding.

“Shots fired! Shots fired, Raleigh! Martin and Haywood in Raleigh!” the audio states.

Police have arrested and charged Whitley-Taylor with the following charges:

  • Felony-assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer

  • Felony- conspiracy to commit a felony

  • Misdemeanor- going armed to the terror of the people

  • Misdemeanor- discharge firearm in city limits

Whitley-Taylor was issued a public defender and received a total bond of $800,000, per court documents.

Another scene was reported just a few blocks away at Martin Street and Pettigrew Street - it's unclear whether the two are connected.

A neighbor told WRAL News they heard what sounded like six gunshots ring out Thursday night. Another resident reported hearing around eight shots, followed by two more that seemed to come from a different gun.
