MIAMI, FL - A man who has been convicted of murdering a teenage girl over Yeezy sneakers more than four years ago lunged at a family member of the victim while in the courtroom ahead of his sentencing.
According to Fox News, 23-year-old Adrian Cosby murdered 18-year-old high school senior Andrea Camps-Lacayo in April 2020. Cosby's sentencing took place on Friday, October 25th and during that hearing, Camps-Lacayo's father read a victim impact statement that apparently set the murderer off. The father, identified as Alexander Camps in an online obituary, said, "You are the epitome of evil and darkness that this world represents. There's only one place animals like you belong, and that's in prison for the rest of your life."
In response, Cosby said, "What the (expletive) you talking about (expletive)." While saying that, Cosby reportedly leaped from his chair towards the father; it took nearly six officers to restrain him.
Back in 2020, the incident took place when Camps-Lacayo and her boyfriend were looking to sell three pairs of Adidas Yeezy shoes worth $935. Camps-Lacayo and her boyfriend, Sergio Berben, met with 19-year-old George Walton outside an abandoned house in Homestead, when Walton asked to try on a pair of the shoes. Berben asked to see payment first, at which point Cosby approached Berben's driver's side door and began shooting.
He struck both Camps-Lacayo and Berben. A jury convicted Cosby of felony murder, attempted murder, and attempted robbery. A judge sentenced him to two life sentences and a concurrent 25-year sentence. Earlier this year, Walton was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, and attempted robbery with a firearm.
According to the New York Post, Camps-Lacayo was set to graduate from Terra Environmental Research Institute before attending Florida International University to study nursing when he was killed by Cosby. Berben was grazed in the arm by one of the bullets while Camps-Lacayo was shot at least once in the torso. Berben drove off but quickly pulled over on the side of the road when he realized his girlfriend was dying. She was fading in and out of consciousness when first responders arrived.
Camps-Lacayo, the captain of her high school dance team, died at a hospital during surgery. Berben told jurors of Cosby, "He shot and killed by girlfriend and tried to kill me as well." After the outburst during the sentencing hearing, Cosby was removed from the courtroom for nearly 20 minutes. After that, he was brought back into the courtroom without Camps-Lacayo's family.
After the verdict was read, Camps-Lacayo's father said, "This court today confirmed once again that truth that we all seek. The truth that you are a fool, a liar, and a monster for what you did not only to Andrea but our whole entire family and friends." The DailyMail.com reported that after the sentencing, the victim's father shared his thoughts in a Facebook post, saying, "Today we put behind bars for life the murderer of our daughter, Andrea. Even toay as I write these words I can't believe that this has happened to such a sweet innocent soul.
This is not a win because it still doesn't take away the pain nor does it bring our daughter back to us. What we can do now is heal from all the pain and suffering this has caused. We love you Andrea and we will always keep your spirit and memory alive. RIP." Her family has created a foundation for her called "Andrea's Smiles for Hope," where they collect donations to support sick children in their community.
