Police Investigate Mysterious Death of Manhattan Designer at Yacht Club

MONTAUK, LONG ISLAND - Authorities have identified the woman found dead onboard a boat in Montauk as a local designer from Manhattan who spent her summers worker on the East End.

Martha Nolan-O'Slatara was found unconscious on a boat at the Montauk Yacht Club at approximately 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5th, the New York Post reported. The 33-year-old, who went by Martha Nolan professionally and in social circles, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her cause of death remains under investigation and will be determined by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office. According to one club member, other members of the Montauk Yacht Club, including some captains, reportedly heard screaming from the docks late Monday.

"She was well known in the community. She was very friendly. Always smiling," one club member said, adding, "There's going to be a lot of conversation about this."

According to her LinkedIn, Nolan was a marketing consultant, entrepreneur, and founder of fashion brand East x East.

She moved to the U.S. from Ireland when she was 26-years-old and started launching pop-ups with her summer wear brand in the Hamptons in 2023. Montauk residents said that Nolan had a reputation for being incredibly kind and was always smiling.

In a press conference on Wednesday, August 6th, Suffolk County police said that the body of Nolan "did not show evidence of violence," the New York Post reported.

The autopsy determined that she did not show signs of a violent death, but police have yet to announce the cause of death or many specific details surrounding the incident. Police said good Samaritans tried to resuscitate Nolan after she was found unconscious on the boat.

Residents and people visiting the area said they are surprised to hear about the homicide investigation, WWNYTV reported. "It's pretty troubling in such a small town, everyone's here to have a good time," one person said. "It's a shame something like that happens, makes you nervous about what's going on in the area."
