EASTON, MA - On Tuesday, the Easton Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at an Easton apartment complex and found the victim, a 16-year-old girl, suffering a gunshot wound to the face. The girl was transported to a nearby hospital and later airlifted to a Boston hospital. The young girl was listed as stable with life-threatening injuries.
As reported by Boston.com, 18-year-old Anthony Lopes was arrested by Massachusetts State Police (MSP) for possession of a firearm. Police said Wednesday, “While the investigation is active, investigators believe this was an isolated incident and that the victim and attacker(s) are known to each other.”
A police spokesperson confirmed the identity of the man as Lopez and said, “Currently, the investigation has led to a substantial collection of evidence, including the seizure of two vehicles. The first was located in the Town of Mansfield and the second in the City of Brockton.”
In a statement released later that day, Easton Police Chief Keith Boone reported, “At this time, there have been no charges sought in the attack; however, an 18-year-old male who resides in Brockton was arrested by members of the Massachusetts State Police, with the assistance of Brockton Police officers, for possession of a firearm. Investigators believe both incidents are related.”
According to The Herald News, Lopes was arraigned in Brockton after his arrest by MSP and is being held on firearms charges with prosecutors naming him as a person of interest in connection with the shooting. The suspect was reportedly arrested while fleeing from police during a traffic stop and was connected to a black Infinity SUV, registered to Lopes' mother which was found abandoned in the area, matching the description of a black SUV that was witnessed fleeing the shooting.
Lopes’ attorney described the suspect as a full-time student at Massasoit Community College with no criminal record. A woman identifying herself as his mother at arraignment told The Enterprise, "He's a good boy. He's never been in trouble.”
The suspect’s bail has been set at $25,000.
WCVB-TV Anchor Rhondella Richardson shared an update on Lopes via X reporting that the victim is in stable condition.
