Massachusetts man dies after tripping in parking lot and falling on his 'knife necklace'

SAUGUS, MA - On Saturday, December 2nd, 42-year-old Patrick Kenney Jr., of Milton, Massachusetts was found in the Kowloon restaurant parking lot off Route 1 in the evening hours in what appeared to be a stabbing. He later died at Massachusetts General Hospital from the injuries he suffered.

Police initially thought that Kenney was a victim of a stabbing incident. However, authorities stated that the incident appears to be accidental. In a joint announcement, Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker and Saugus Police Chief Michael Ricciardelli, said, "This incident appears to be accidental and no additional parties are believed to be involved."

Kenney's father said that his son's death was a "freak accident," with multiple sources telling the media that Kenney was fatally wounded by a knife that was attached to something he was reportedly wearing around his neck. A statement from the family reads, in part, "Patrick was a loving father, husband, brother son and loyal friend to many."

According to reports, Kenney had a knife attached to a lanyard that was around his neck, which is said to may have played a part in his death. As of this writing, it is still unclear what the purpose of the knife was or why Kenney was wearing it around his neck.

A law enforcement source told local news station Boston25 that Kenney's death was caused by a "knife necklace" rather than a knife attached to a lanyard. The source also stated that Kenney accidentally tripped in the parking lot as he was walking to a bus to get back home, which caused him to injure himself with the knife.

He is survived by his wife, Lauren and young twin children. The Wong family, who own the Kowloon restaurant, said that they have known Kenney and his family for years and that they are loyal customers of the establishment. According to the Wong family, on that Saturday, Kenney had taken a bus from the South Shore to Saugus with family and friends to have dinner at Kowloon.

A statement from the Wong family reads, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family. Nothing else matters at this time. We ask that people don't jump to conclusions until an investigation is completed." Kenney's family said in a statement, "Our family is mourning the loss of Patrick, focused on his wife Lauren and two young children, and trying to make sense of this horrific tragedy."

A GofundMe page has been set up for the family for Kenney and has already surpassed its initial goal of $50,000, with $94,909 raised as of this writing.

Kenney's death is still under investigation by state police detectives as well as the district attorney's office and SPD police detectives. This is the second tragic incident that Kowloon has been associated with in a two week span. On Thanksgiving Eve, a violent brawl broke out and four people have reportedly been charged in connection with that fight.
