MEMPHIS, TN - A middle school employee has been charged with felony assault after he allegedly stabbed a delivery driver with a pen for being late.
The alleged suspect, 36-year-old Braxton Stewart, has been charged with felony aggravated assault for the stabbing that took place on August 20, according to a Memphis Police Department (MPD) affidavit reviewed by USA TODAY. The stabbing happened just before 9:30 a.m. at American Way Middle School, where Stewart works as part of Memphis-Shelby County Schools.
The delivery driver was stabbed six times, according to the affidavit. Someone called MPD to the middle school about a "wounding." According to the driver, he was late and got into an argument with Stewart, who pushed him in the chest.
The two began fighting, and that's when Stewart allegedly stabbed the driver with a pen multiple times, per the affidavit. Officers examined the driver and saw six puncture wounds, four on his back, one between his eyes and one on the left side of his neck. First responders took the driver to a nearby hospital while officers took Stewart into custody.
Stewart was booked into the Shelby County Jail on a $25,000 bond, Law & Crime reported. Jail records show he was released on Friday, August 21. He had an arraignment on Monday, August 24, and is scheduled to appear in court again on Friday, August 28.
