DEARBORN, MI - A 53-year-old man was non-fatally shot by Dearborn Police following a domestic disturbance call, with neighbors suggesting that the man was struggling with grief following the recent passing of his loved ones, according to Local 4 Detroit.
According to authorities, Dearborn Police officers responded to a reported disturbance along New York Street after receiving reports of a man repeatedly yelling “die” outside a residence.
When officers arrived at the scene, a 53-year-old man reportedly exited the home while armed with a rifle, prompting officers to open fire. The unidentified man was transported to an area hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Mary Zieschang, a neighbor of the man injured in the shooting, recalled hearing the gunfire before looking outside.
“At first, we kind of looked at each other and thought that it might’ve been fireworks, but that seemed unlikely. So, we looked outside and I saw someone crouched down by a car with a rifle aimed at the house,” Zieschang told a local news outlet.
According to Zieschang, the man had recently experienced significant personal loss, raising the possibility that grief may have played a role in the incident.
“I know that he really struggled with the loss of two loved ones in the past year and he was looking for help. There were a lot of moments where he needed a hug and he was very heartbroken,” Zieschang stated.
Dearborn Police have not released additional details regarding the incident, noting that the Michigan State Police are leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
