Michigan man posed as utility worker in alleged home invasion robbery and murder

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI - A Michigan man is facing felony murder and armed robbery charges after being arrested in Louisiana in connection to a home invasion in which a senior citizen was killed.

Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, was apprehended in Louisiana, following the Friday home invasion incident. Authorities released home doorbell camera footage that revealed a man in reflective clothing outside a residence in the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills- in what they believe was a ruse on the part of Hernandez to obtain access to the home's basement, according to NBC News.

The suspect in the incident allegedly claimed to be an employee of electric provider DTE Energy. Authorities describe the home invader- accompanied by an unidentified accomplice- as obtaining access to the residential basement, where he attacked homeowner Hussein Murray, 72. Murray was taped and bound by the intruders, and later found deceased by law enforcement responding to a 911 call from Murray's wife.

"Because of the gruesome nature of the injuries, it was not immediately clear if he had been shot or bludgeoned to death," law enforcement said of victim's death, according to KSFN-TV.

The two individuals involved in the home invasion ruse reportedly sought access to the home the night before the fatal incident on Thursday. They returned the next day, claiming a need to inspect gas infastructure in the home's basement.

Murray's wife was also bound by the home invaders, who demanded that she provide them jewelery and valuables. In spite of this, the woman was able to contact authorities for assistance.

"This was a gruesome attack on an elderly couple in their home,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said of the home invasion. “I have authorized the highest charge which carries a mandatory life without parole sentence for this brutal crime.”

Michigan law enforcement authorities suspected that Hernandez was traveling across the country in the aftermath of the crime, and sought assistance from agencies in Louisiana in apprehending him.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Department pledged to secure Hernandez's extradition to Michigan in a Facebook post following his arrest, and pledged to secure the arrest of the man described as Hernandez's accomplice in the killing.

A second arrest in the case was made during a traffic stop in Plymouth, Michigan on Monday afternoon, according to KSFN-TV.

“We are heartbroken by the news of his death but our family will bond through this with the resolve he has instilled in us by being the man he was," Murray's family said of the victim's death in a statement.
