Michigan man successfully defended his home from two intruders, one suspect at large, another facing 21 felonies

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI - A home invasion resulted in a shootout in Dearborn Heights, Michigan on Saturday morning when one of two assailants, identified as Phillip Price, broke into the home of 24-year-old Benjamin Nevers who opened fire on the armed assailant to defend himself and his sleeping girlfriend.

As reported by WXYZ, Nevers told reporters that he was struck in the foot during the exchange of gunfire with one of the intruders who entered his home via the kitchen window. Nevers and his friend had recently returned from a trip to the Bahamas and were resting from their travels.

He related to the news outlet that the two men worked their way through the home into the living room holding a friend of Nevers’ at gunpoint.

The two burglars searched the home for valuables to steal when they came to Nevers' bedroom door. "Then I woke up, and I was just quick enough to react to grab my gun and cock it and I just sat there and kind of waited. I knew they were going to come to my room," he said according to Fox2 Detroit.

When the armed intruder entered his room the shootout began with the two men firing nearly simultaneously with Nevers struck in the foot, shattering it, and also in the back. His girlfriend was also hit in the back sustaining serious injuries.

“I know she went into shock immediately because it traveled up, hit her body and her kidney, and it’s lodged somewhere in her chest,” Nevers told WXYZ.

Nevers described the moment he encountered the gunman, saying, “He seen that I had the gun like this, and he shot me. Shot me in the foot first, and as soon as he shot, I shot back. So, I shot twice, and I know I hit him in the leg."

“My foot completely shattered,” he told reporters. “They have screws and plates, immediate surgery, and then I got hit in the back right here as well.”

Home surveillance footage showed the stricken suspect struggling to leave the home while the second burglar fled. Police apprehended Price who was treated and remanded without bond. Price is facing 21 felony charges that include two counts of assault with intent to murder per KXYZ. Dearborn Heights Police are conducting a manhunt for the remaining suspect.
