MILWAUKEE, WI- Political correctness has apparently supplanted officer safety in Milwaukee as the city’s Common Council announced Monday that police officers in the city will be prohibited from wearing face coverings, Fox 6 Now reported.
The council made no pronouncement on whether violent protesters will be subject to the same restrictions.
The Common Council issued a news release stating that the Milwaukee Police Department is required to adopt an addendum to its Uniform Standard Operating Procedure banning officers from using face coverings.
“SOP modification strengthens public trust, ensures officer identification, and positions Milwaukee as a national model for transparent, accountable [and politically correct] policing under the ICE Out framework.”
There, the Common Council gave up the gig. This policy is nothing less than a means to placate the far-left, anti-ICE lunatics permeating primarily blue cities.
The Milwaukee Police Department issued a statement that appears to have been issued at gunpoint, stating, “MPD is grateful to our elected officials, the MPA, and MPSO who worked in collaboration to make this SOP modification. We are always better together.”
“There will be no secret police in our city, and we are setting high standards for safety for all. Our residents deserve to know who is working in their neighborhoods as we work to make our city the most welcoming we can,” said Alexander Ayala of the Milwaukee Police Association.
The leftists on the Common Council are thrilled with the announcement.
“This is a core issue at the center of the federal shutdown right now, and without federal action, we are taking steps locally to increase transparency and accountability,” said Common Council President Jose Perez.
No, the core issue “at the center of the federal shutdown” is unhinged Democrats demanding the Department of Homeland Security risk the safety not only of ICE agents, but also their families, by refusing to obey Democrat demands that agents be unmasked. It is unclear if the proposed policy will also ban officers from wearing gas masks during riots and face coverings for undercover operations.
Milwaukee alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa said, “We met with the Police Chief, delivered the message of what our constituents were demanding, and we acted.. This is about responsiveness, accountability, and trust.”
“This SOP change is a fantastic first step, and to align with this momentum, there will be a forthcoming ordinance before the Council to codify these standards citywide, reinforcing the prohibition on facial coverings by any law enforcement operating in Milwaukee,” said Alderman Alex Brower.
We might remind Brower about a little thing called the Supremacy Clause, which exempts federal law enforcement officials from having to obey ordinances put in place by unhinged leftists such as him. All this would do is set up a conflict between Milwaukee police officers and federal law enforcement officers.
Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera, also praised the council’s action.
“These actions represent important steps toward greater transparency, accountability, and protection of civil liberties in our community. They are also the direct result of sustained pressure from residents, advocates, and community leaders who organized, spoke out, and demanded safer, more transparent approaches to public safety,” Neumann-Ortiz said.
“We celebrate the responsiveness shown by appointed and elected officials at the Milwaukee Police Department, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Milwaukee Common Council, who listened and acted. This moment demonstrates that when communities engage and hold institutions accountable, meaningful change is possible–and that public safety must always be rooted in trust, dignity, and respect for the rights of all people.”
Brower said the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission is expected to meet later this week to officially approve the change. He said his colleagues are working to make it city law so that it applies to all law enforcement officers in the city.
Good luck with that.
