CHANHASSEN, MN - There was a heavy law enforcement response after a large crowd surrounded and confronted ICE agents who were reportedly trying to detain two men at a construction site on Saturday, December 13.
During the incident, one of the men was taken away in an ambulance and the other man stayed on the roof until ICE agents left, FOX 9 reported. People in the crowd gave the man blankets, warm drinks and food to wait out the agents. Witnesses to the incident said that ICE agents were attempting to arrest two workers at a house that is under construction.
A crowd formed when the two men would not come down from the roof. The Carver County Sheriff's Department said that what was going on was a federal operation, and sheriff's deputies responded to the scene to "maintain peace" and "ensure emergency services" could get into the neighborhood.
The sheriff's office did not have any detentions or make any arrests during the operation. There was allegedly a confrontation when a young man or teenager arrived wearing a Trump "Make America Great Again" hat. Footage shows he was pushed and chased away by protesters.
"It's mind-blowing that people are out here, -20 plus degree weather, building houses for our community members, and they're being targeted by ICE," said Jenna Cruz of Chaska.
"Consistently, we were asking for a judicial warrant; they did not have that. They said that they had an administrative warrant. But they refuse to show that to us as well. But that's not anything constitutionally binding," Minnesota State Rep. Alex Falconer sad. "There was a couple of small altercations overall; everything seemed to be relatively calm. In a situation like that, it could have devolved easily."
ICE agents are not required to show warrants to people who are not named in the warrant or anyone who is uninvolved in the operation, according to FOX 9. "It was scary, it was really scary. It was just something you never think that's going to happen," said Miranda, a community activist.
It is unclear if the man taken away in the ambulance is in ICE custody or not. No information was provided on what led ICE agents to the area in the first place. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said their deputies that responded to the scene did not witness any attacks on agents and helped them leave the scene because the crowd was blocking them, CBS News reported.
"HCSO deputies did not make any arrests, use any force, deploy any chemical irritants, or use other crowd control devices," they said in a statement. "The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office will always respond to a help call where there are reported attacks."
