As reported by The New York Post, Nephew’s ex-partner Erin Abramson, 47, his wife Kathryn, his 15-year-old son with Abramson, and seven-year-old son Oliver were found dead in their Duluth homes. Nephew himself was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to The Daily Mail, Nephew's social media posts demonstrated he was increasingly distressed by the prospect of a second Trump administration. In an anti-religious July post, he said, "My mental health and the world can no longer peacefully coexist, and a lot of the reason is religion."
"I am terrified of religious zealots inflicting their misguided beliefs on me and my family. I have intrusive thoughts of being burned at the stake as a witch, or crucified on a burning cross," he continued.
"Having people actually believe that I or my child are Satan or, the anti-Christ or whatever their favorite color of boogie man they are afraid are this week."
He made several references to The Handmaid's Tale, a dystopian fiction work depicting an America taken over by an authoritarian oligarchy masquerading as a Christian theocracy. He claimed that Republicans were "making it harder for women to leave" violent relationships adding, "Gilead here we come," about the fictional nation.
A troubling 2022 Op-Ed published in the Duluth News Tribune authored by the suspect seemed to presage Nephew's actions when he wrote, "It's time to start building better frameworks for mental health in this country. More mental health specialists are needed because most Americans deny they have mental health struggles.
"Because they have to, because they're told to, or because they don't realize their mind is broken, they keep pushing forward, incurring one psychic injury after another, trauma after trauma, collecting interest, until finally the synapses overload, and they suffer a breakdown. For most of us, that's the best end result. For millions of Americans, a breakdown leads to suicide — or homicide before suicide."
The New York Post noted that Nephew's other political posts appeared to take on an anti-Trump character with one showing an image with the aces of former Presidents Barack Obama and Trump, President Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris with the word "hate" written under Trump's name while the Democrats had the words "hope," "heal," and "grow" corresponding to them.
In another July post the outlet noted he wrote, “Not that anyone cares, but as an Independent voter, I would really like to see both the political parties in our country pick better candidates." He added, “We can do better than a binary choice between fascism and not fascism.”
