KANSAS CITY, MO – Authorities in Springfield, Missouri, arrested a 36-year-old man earlier in August who is accused of running over his pregnant ex-girlfriend in Kansas City, proceeding to then shoot her over 20 times as she laid helplessly on the ground.
On August 6th, 42-year-old Braisen Cain was apparently on-foot amid the 4000 block of Morrell Avenue when police say her ex-boyfriend, Arel Dawkins, intentionally struck her with his black Ford F-150, leaving the pregnant woman injured on the ground.
Authorities say neighbors and witnesses saw the unsettling act play out, with some even capturing video footage, as Dawkins allegedly exited his vehicle and opened fire on Cain as she laid on the ground.
Dawkins reportedly went as far as to reload the .40 caliber weapon during the incident, with authorities saying that the victim was shot a total of 21 times, which a probable cause statement relating to Dawkins’ arrest notes that police located “an empty handgun magazine” next to where Cain’s body was lying.
Cain was pronounced dead at the scene, with Dawkins reportedly having fled the area before police could arrive.
Detectives learned that Dawkins and the victim had recently broken up, with Cain carrying the suspect’s child at the time of the fatal shooting.
Furthermore, investigators were informed by family members of the suspect that he admitted to killing Cain and was considering taking his own life.
Dawkins was later apprehended by authorities in Springfield without incident after police traced his phone to the area.
Following Dawkins’ arrest, he was transported over to the Green County Jail where detectives attempted to interview him but he “declined to provide a statement,” according to police records.
A press release from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office notes that Dawkins has since been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the August 6th incident.
A GoFundMe has since been established by the loved ones of Cain in effort to help cover the funeral costs as well as to help support the five children she leaves behind.
