PORTLAND, OR- Authorities have alleged that the woman whose toddler died of a suspected fentanyl overdose is linked to an armed carjacking that was committed after the child's death- which ended with police shooting at the man the woman was with during the crime.
According to KGW, on Friday, October 11th, the woman, identified as Mary Jacobo, was arraigned in connection with several crimes. Court documents state that Jacobo was with Jesse West when the two both pointed guns at a driver in a carjacking at a North Portland Transit Center on September 26th. Later that day, West was shot and wounded by police in the Woodlawn neighborhood as they attempted to arrest him for the carjacking.
On Wednesday, October 9th, West pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder. Investigators said that the two had been seen together several days leading up to the carjacking and Jacobo was eventually arrested in Seaside, following a nearly three-week search. Police said that Jacobo's two-year old died from suspected fentanyl exposure on September 12th. The toddler later died at the hospital. Evidence from the scene and conversations with hospital staff led detectives to believe fentanyl played a role in the girl's death.
As of this writing, Jacobo has not been charged in connection with her daughter's death. Court documents state that two weeks to the day after her daughter's death, Jacobo robbed the man at the Delta Park Vanport Transit Station. The man said that he was dropping off a friend around 1:53 a.m. when a red Kia pulled up next to him. The driver, later identified as West, exited the car brandishing an AR-15 style rifle and demanded the man's keys.
The court documents said, "I'm going to have to shoot you," West told the man, saying that he would get the keys either way. When the man did not comply, West reportedly shoved the rifle in his face. At that point, the woman passenger in the Kia, indentified later as Jacobo, got out of the car and pointed a handgun at the man, saying, "Give him your keys." The man complied and West got into the car and drove away, almost hitting him in the process.
Jacobo then jumped back into the Kia and followed West out of the parking lot. Investigators said that the two have been under investigation for a string of robberies in the area. Later that evening, around 6:21 p.m., police attempted to arrest West, who at the time was wanted for separate violent felonies involving a firearm. When approaching West, there was an "exchange of gunfire." Three officers reportedly fired their duty weapons at West. West was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remains in police custody.
Jacobo was arrested on Tuesday, October 8th, on outstand warrants. At the time of her arrest, police said she was in possession of a gun. Court documents state that Jacobo has been charged with first degree robbery with a firearm, second degree robbery with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, coercion with a firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, unauthorized use of a vehicle and menacing all related to the September 26th carjacking. As of this writing, she remains in jail without bail.
KGW reported that since the passing of the two-year old, family members are remembering her as always "bubbly." Dominque Hodges, the girl's cousin, said, "I was heartbroken. That is one of the worst things that could happen to anyone. She was super funny. She was always like super bubbly and had these really big brown eyes. Even from a newborn baby her hair was like super long and crazy."
The family said that Jacobo has a history of addiction and has three kids, including an eight-year-old boy who was also there at the time of the toddler's death. Family also said that they learned that the girl was staying with her mother at a friend's house despite her mother not having custody.
