NEW CITY, NY - According to police with the Clarkstown Police Department (CPD), a police sergeant was found dead, alongside his wife and two sons in what appears to be a murder-suicide at their family home on Clydesdale Court.
NBC4 reported that officers were dispatched to the home shortly after midnight on Saturday, December 30th, to perform a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers entered the home around 12:20 a.m. and found all four people dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
The parents have been identified as 49-year-old Watson Morgan, 43-year-old Ornela Morgan, and the boys were ages 10 and 12. Watson, the father, was a police sergeant with the Bronxville Police Department (BPD). Police were sent to the home after Watson didn't show up for his evening shift with BPD.
According to ABC News, all four had gunshot wounds and a handgun was recovered at the scene. CPD said, "At this phase in the investigation it is believed that Watson killed his wife and two children, prior to killing himself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound."
Watson began his career with the New York Police Department in 2000 before joining the force in Bronxville, a village in Westchester County in 2007. He was promoted to sergeant in 2016. In a statement, BPD Chief Christopher Satriale said that the killings have left the department with "profoundly broken hearts at the senseless loss of innocent lives."
Milagros Honoridez, a neighbor to the Morgan family, said, "We're just shocked. It's never happened in this neighborhood." When speaking about Watson, Honoridez said, "He's a very loving father, that's all I can say. Very loving. Very caring family. I mean, he's a very caring person."
CBS News shared the full statement from BPD, which said, "It is with profoundly broken hearts at the senseless loss of innocent lives that we send this message to a grieving community. Sergeant Watson Morgan and his two sons and wife were discovered deceased at their home in New City, all with gunshot wounds, with Sergeant Morgan's self-inflicted. Sergeant Morgan failed to appear for the evening shift last night and our Police Department contacted the Clarkstown Police Department in his hometown who made the discovery."
The statement added, "...Our hearts go out to Sergeant Morgan's extended family. Our thoughts and prayers are also with his Bronxville Police Department family. As we try to come to terms in a state of shock and sadness, we will continue to share with you what we can based on what the Clarkstown Police Department releases, as this is an ongoing investigation."
The wife was a New City public school teacher. The town of Clarkstown said that grief counselors will be available for students. As of this writing, it is unclear as to what led to the family tragedy.
