PARIS, FRANCE- A woman in Paris who shouted threats now finds herself in the hospital after French police opened fire on her, the Financial Times reports.
Paris prosecutors say the woman, who was wearing a burka and who frightened commuters at the station on Tuesday, is listed in critical condition with at least one gunshot wound to her abdomen.
Officials say the woman’s identity had not yet been confirmed. However, they believe “she could be the same person who in 2021 threatened urban patrols for the counter-terrorism Sentinelle operation and had been committed to a psychiatric ward over mental health issues,” Reuters reported.
The Paris incident is the latest in many concerning incidents, which began earlier in October when an armed assailant killed a teacher using a knife in the northern French town of Arras while swearing allegiance to the Islamic State in a video.
Tensions have further increased not only in France but across the globe after radical Hamas terrorists invaded Israel, killing over 1,000 innocent Israeli citizens. Because Israel has taken steps to defend itself after the unprovoked attack, radicals have been emboldened to carry out anti-Semitic attacks on college campuses and in large cities. The French government has warned the current conflict in the Middle East could encourage radicalized individuals to carry out such attacks.
The incident this week began, the Times reported, when two passengers on a commuter train contacted emergency services, reporting a woman wearing a full-body veil was shouting “Allahu akbar,” then shouting, “You’re all going to die,” while also threatening to detonate a bomb, according to a statement from Laurent Nunez, police chief of the Paris region.
THe woman was detained at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France station in the southeast section of Paris, ordering her to sit on the ground while they established a perimeter and evacuated the station. However, Nunez said she got up at one point and advanced on police officers despite orders for her to stand down and show her hands to prove she was not armed.
She refused to comply, at which time two officers fired a total of eight shots at her, prosecutors said. Police found no weapons or explosives at the scene.
“The officers faced a situation that could have been dangerous,” Nunez said. “It is always easy in hindsight to judge, but when you consider the information that was given to police, this situation was very threatening.”
Prosecutors said two simultaneous investigations were opened–one against the woman for threatening the police and advocating for terrorism–and one to investigate whether police were justified in using deadly physical force.
France has seen a spate of bomb threats over recent weeks, which has left the country on edge while forcing evacuations of airports, tourist attractions such as the Chateau de Versailles, and a Jewish school located north of Paris.
French prosecutors also this week launched an investigation into graffiti depicting the Star of David scrawled on some 60 buildings in the 14th arrondissement in the south of Paris.
