NEW YORK CITY, NY - Once thriving neighborhoods in northwestern Queens, New York have transformed into something that resembles a third world country.
Yahoo News/Fox News Digital reports that the Elmhurst, Corona, and Jackson Heights neighborhoods are now flooded with migrants and prostitutes. The migrants have taken over the sidewalks selling clothing and food, while the prostitutes “openly solicit sex from passersby – reportedly including teens.”
The area is on the border of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s 14th Congressional District and is known for being a “melting pot for migrants.” However, many of the migrants in the area now are reported to be in the United States illegally and therefore unable to obtain permits to work.
The only option available to them is to take to the streets in an effort to survive, according to residents.
A video taken by area resident Ramses Frias, gives great insight into the problem. As Frias walks down two streets, migrants almost as far as you can see are lined up with piles of clothing, toys, shoes, and even pots and pans for sale. And the prostitutes are openly flaunting their bodies and soliciting sex even in broad daylight.
Both prostitution and selling food or goods without a permit are illegal in New York.
The situation is also becoming unsanitary as trash overflows on the street corners.
Speaking to Fox News Digital Frias said, “Like most of my like-minded residents, we see this as a third-world market. Basically, you just see clothes thrown across the floor… the items are stolen from donation bins or stolen from stores, and they just set up shop outside brick-and-mortar businesses. They take away trade from these businesses and don’t pay taxes.”
“There are no repercussions; they get a free pass.” Frias continued.
Crime and prostitution are increasing rapidly as well.
“They do whatever they please, they are open about it and not discreet,” Frias told Fox News Digital about the prostitution issue. “They line up all along 90th street in front of a pizzeria, a 99-cent store and just try to pull men. You’ll see multiple women in scantily clad clothing. Now it’s cold, they are a bit covered up, but it will get worse in the summer.”
New York Mayor Eric Adams has been very outspoken about the prostitution issue saying, “Among these legal businesses, you have these single beds—it is clear what is taking place there and this is really bringing down the quality of life of this community and anyone who says this is a victimless crime, just really needs to see the inhumane conditions. Sex trafficking is real…and we’re not going to sit idly by and pretend that it’s not happening.”
Catalina Cruz currently holds the Assembly District 39 seat in the area, and Frias, who is formerly a Democrat, is running for it; and he is running as a Republican.
Cruz has “sponsored legislation to decriminalize prostitution” and has joined Representative Ocasio-Cortez in calling for more vendor permits to be issued to the illegal migrants.
Frias is ready for change and believes that a Republican approach is needed.
With a mother that emigrated from Haiti and a father from the Dominican Republic, Frias is pro-immigrant.
“I love the hustle of the immigrants in this neighborhood, but people cannot just do as they please, and the area has effectively deteriorated into an open flea market. You literally step in either direction, and you’re in a different country. Different types of food, different types of culture. It makes me open to everybody’s ideals on things, because at the end of the day, everybody just wants a safe place to live,” Frias said.
He added, “I have lived here my whole life, I’ve seen the changes go from good, too bad to worse, and it’s at that peak of worse right now, and I don’t want it to go past that.”
Ocasio-Cortez did not respond to the request for comment from Fox News Digital.
