New York man who killed father, son execution-style in Brooklyn is shot and killed after charging police with knife

BROOKLYN, NY - A man who gunned down his upstairs neighbors in what New York City police called “execution-style killings” has himself met his demise at the hands of New York’s Finest, the New York Post reports.

Jason Pass, 47, had been on the run since the double murder on Sunday night of 47-year-old school bus driver Bladimy Mathurin and his 27-year-old stepson, Chinwai Mod. On Wednesday morning at around 7:10 a.m., Pass was stopped by police in the borough of Brooklyn when a license plate reader got a hit on his vehicle, NYPD said. (NOTE: The Post reported the son’s name as Chinwai Mode; Fox News reported the son’s name as Mod Chinwai).

Pass, who was identified in the murders due to video surveillance of the killing, “jumped out of the car with a knife in his hand and took off running,” NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell told reporters. Police described the knife as having a six-inch blade.

Officers were able to run Pass down and got him cornered, where they negotiated with him for about 15 minutes, Chell said. Pass told the responding officers, “What’s happening today is not going to end well.”

With that, “for some unknown reason,” Chell said, Pass “did a full sprint [and] charged the officers.”

“He didn’t give us a choice,” the chief said. “[Our officers] did everything they could to neutralize this person and get that knife out of his hand.”

Pass was transported to NYU Langone Hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his wounds after being shot four times by police, three to the chest.

The incident took on the feel of a “suicide by cop,” a feeling shared by a police source, who told the post, “He charged at them with a knife,” then referring to it as attempted “suicide.”

Witnesses backed up the police account, with one neighbor telling the Post the police talked to Pass “for a long time, like 15 minutes.”

“They were talking to him for a long time, like 15 minutes, they were just trying to reason with him,” said one woman, who asked to have her name withheld. “It looked like he was crying. He put his hands on his forehead a few times. And then they started yelling.

“They kept yelling, ‘Drop the knife! Drop the knife! Drop the knife!’...and then they shot him,” she said.

Another witness named Terry, a registered nurse told reporters Pass seemed “either confused or scared” when police cornered him.

“He was standing like this with his hand on his forehead,” she recalled. “The cops were trying to talk him down. I heard them say, ‘Drop the knife!’ They said it a few times. Then the shots.”

Pass was a former correction officer and was identified as the suspect in the double murder rather quickly.

The shooting occurred at the Flatbush Gardens apartment complex in Brooklyn Sunday night. The housing complex is well known in the city and is where Barbara Streisand and Michael K. Williams grew up, the Post wrote.

The incident began over a noise complaint, whereby an argument ensued. The Post reviewed video footage which showed Pass, wearing dark clothing and appearing angry, confronting Mathurin and Mod just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday. The video did not have audio, so it is unknown what was said during the argument.

Things appeared to get nasty when Mathurin came out of his apartment with scissors and confronted Pass again in the hallway. It was then that Pass pulled out the handgun, which led Mathurin to simply wave it off.

Mathurin’s wife, Marie Delille, attempted to drag her husband back; however, he pushed her off and tried to confront Pass again. She then got her husband turned around and walking back to their apartment when Pass opened fire, hitting Mathurin with several shots, causing him to fall to the floor.

Mod attempted to flee after Mathurin was shot; however, Pass fired several rounds at him, including twice after he collapsed to the floor in a pool of his blood, the Post wrote, shooting him execution-style in the head.

Not finished yet, Pass then walked up to Mathurin, who was still alive and moving and shot him execution-style in the head, killing him. He then entered an elevator and fled the building.

According to Mathurin’s widow, Pass fired nine shots at her husband and son in front of her 10-year-old daughter.

NYPD sources told the Post that nine .45 cal. shell casings were recovered, along with five bullet fragments.

This was not the first time the men have gotten into conflicts, Delille said, claiming the family has been feuding with him for years, usually over noise. NYPD Chief of Detectives confirmed her account, noting there were six previous 311 calls complaining of people walking upstairs placed from Pass’s apartment.

“The man hates us with every bone in his body,” Delille told CBS New York of Pass.

“My husband had no gun, no weapon,” Delille told the Post. “Why did you bring a gun to shoot my family? Why would you bring a gun to tear my family apart? Why? Why?”

Good job guys and glad no Officers were injured. Understand that you did EVERYTHING possible but the suspect was determined to commit suicide by cop. You had no choice or one of you may have ended up dead so be proud of what you had to do and did your job like a professional.
