NEW YORK CITY, NY - a Bronx judge ruled that a woman accused of murdering her two young children back in 2022 was not responsible for the slayings by reason of mental disease or defect, with the case drawing direct comparisons to the ongoing Lindsay Clancy trial.
On November 26, 2022, then-22-year-old Dimone Fleming fatally stabbed her 3-year-old and 11-month-old sons while staying at a Bronx family shelter, a fact that was apparently not in dispute as the case went to trial, where she was charged with first-degree murder.
The father of the 11-month-old was the one to discover the murdered children buried underneath a pile of clothing in the bathtub after police had picked Fleming up earlier that day for an evaluation after a shelter employee called 911 over smoke and water coming from Fleming’s unit, along with Fleming being found to be “acting irrationally.”
Prior to Fleming killing her two young children, she had been treated at an area hospital two months earlier, where she received a diagnosis of depressive disorder and was prescribed medication to treat said mental illness. However, Fleming reportedly didn’t take her prescribed medication and instead engaged in daily marijuana use, which allegedly exacerbated her mental health condition.
On August 24, 2026, prosecutors and Fleming’s attorney reportedly came to an agreement that Fleming was in a state of psychosis when she murdered her two children, leading Bronx Judge Audrey Stone to find Fleming not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
A follow-up hearing is slated for September 18, and Fleming has not been released from custody, but prison is off the table for the woman who killed her two children. Fleming’s case has drawn speculation and observed parallels to the ongoing Lindsay Clancy case, which is still being deliberated by jurors as of this writing, as many of the core elements of the cases are similar.
The Clancy case has been a flashpoint of public and online discourse and involves a woman who has admitted to killing her three children and whose defense in court rests on her allegedly experiencing postpartum psychosis, which purportedly left her incapable of controlling or understanding her actions.
Advocates of Clancy have openly voiced support for the postpartum psychosis defense presented in court, with some supporters of the accused going as far as to push conspiracy theories that Clancy’s ex-husband is responsible for the murders and framed his ex-wife. Jury deliberations are slated to continue in the Clancy case on August 31.
