New York police officers in Washington, D.C. 'to bolster Capitol security' participated in foot pursuit

WASHINTON, D.C. - In an unusual sight, citizens of Washington, D.C., and visitors were treated Tuesday to a foot pursuit that included officers of the NYPD assisting the beleaguered DC Metro Police.

According to reporting from The Washington Post, NYPD officers arriving in Washington, D.C. witnessed a foot pursuit in progress and joined their fellow officers in the chase. Citing Tom Lynch, a spokesman for the D.C. Metro police, officers initially made a stop as part of an auto theft investigation.

Two suspects fled from the vehicle and the NYPD officers arriving by bus nearby saw the incident. Lynch told reporters that the New York Officers "helped us run after" the two suspects who were both taken into custody. “We appreciate our friends in the NYPD for their assistance,” he said.

John Chell, NYPD Chief of Patrol wrote in a post to X, "All law enforcement are BROTHERS and SISTERS throughout the world. Whether active or retired we share the same DNA! To Protect and Serve—-ALWAYS!!! A bond that is formed on day one to always back each other up….We literally just got into the DC Metro area when we just reacted to the situation without a second thought. Now on to protests to help our Capitol Police……"

Chell shared another post from NYPD Deputy Commissioner, Operations Kaz Daughtry who said, "The NYPD will always support our fellow brothers and sisters in law enforcement.  This morning, while headed to DC to assist the DC Capitol Police with events this week, my team and I joined DC law enforcement in a foot pursuit and helped apprehend this fleeing suspect wanted for stealing a car.  Your NYPD is always on duty and always working to make New Yorkers, and in this case, citizens of Washington DC safe.  Different area code, different state, same result—another criminal under arrest."

Over 200 Officers from the NYPD's already thinly stretched force were sent to the nation's capital and sworn in as special officers of the U.S. Capitol Police to assist in controlling mass demonstrations against the address of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address a joint session of Congress.

At least 200 protesters were arrested on Tuesday after illegally breaching the Cannon House Office Building. The mayhem continued on Wednesday, with American flags burning while Palestine flags were raised, and Hamas grafiti was sprayed on American iconic landmarks.
