Sheriff's deputy shot in the line of duty dies two weeks later from his injuries

NEWTON COUNTY, IN - On Sunday, September 1st, a Newton County sheriff's deputy was shot in the line of duty while assisting the Iroquois County, Illinois Sheriff's Office in an incident.

During the operation, Newton County Sheriff's Office Corporal Brandon Schreiber was shot by a suspect and was immediately described by the sheriff's office as in "critical condition" For nearly two weeks, Schreiber remained in critical condition and on Tuesday, September 10th, Sheriff S.L. Cothran announced that the deputy would not survive his injuries.

A Facebook post confirms that Corporal Schreiber passed away on Wednesday, September 11th.

In the update, Cothran said, "Despite the tremendous and heroic efforts of his medical team, we have been informed that Corporal Brandon Schreiber will not survive his injuries." Newton County Sheriff's Office said that further details would be provided in the coming days. Schreiber was a five-year veteran of the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting incident happened during an incident that concluded in Sheldon, Illinois, which is a 10-minute drive west of Kentland. According to WGN9, the Illinois State Police (ISP) led the investigation of the incident and said that preliminary reports show that officers from the Iroquois Sheriff's Office were engaged in a pursuit of an armed suspect with a hostage on the evening of September 1st.

After the pursuit crossed into Indiana, ISP said the Newton County Sheriff's Office joined in to help. The pursuit then came back into Illinois and the suspect crashed in Sheldon. The suspect then exited his vehicle and gunfire was exchanged. ISP said that during the exchange of gunfire, the suspect and a deputy from the Newton County Sheriff's Office were both struck. That deputy was then identified as Schreiber.

ISP said that the suspect, 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clinfton, Illinois, was pronounced dead at the scene. Upon checking the car, no hostage was located inside of the vehicle. After being shot, Schreiber was taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital and was then flown to the Carle Trauma Center in Urbana in critical condition. ISP will lead the investigation into the use of force, which will then be handed over to the Iroquois County State's Attorney's Office.

Corporal Schreiber is an organ donor and his sacrifice will likely save the lives of many others. According to Newsbug, a prayer vigil was organized for Schreiber on the Newton County Courthouse lawn. Sheriff Cothran spoke about the turnout of the event and praised the community for their show of support. He said, "We work for the best communities and county there is. Every officer does their best to be there for the community and the community has shown us they are here for us as well."

He also noted the large turnout for the vigil and emphasized the community's willingness to openly express their faith through prayer, saying, "We are fortunate to live where we live, to have the values and morals that surround us, and to not be afraid to publicly have faith in prayer. We cannot thank the community enough for their support; it means more than I could ever put into words."
