North Carolina: Gunman Opens Fire on Deputies, Hides in Crawl Space, Attacks Responding SBI Agents

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, NC - Two Rockingham County Sheriff's deputies and an agent with the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) were shot at in the morning hours on Saturday, October 3, in Reidsville.

A man in his thirties has been arrested on an attempted murder charge after the director of the SBI said he shot an agent earlier in the day. The alleged suspect, 38-year-old Marvin White, shot at two deputies responding to a call in the 800 block of Walker Street, WRAL News reported. Thankfully, the deputies were not injured.

SBI agents began searching the area and found White hiding in a crawl space under the house. White then came out of the crawl space and began firing at agents, hitting one of them in the leg. The agent was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The agent will have leg surgery at another hospital, SBI Director Chip Hawley said.

The agent is a 10-year SBI veteran who serves on the agency's Special Response Team and works in the Northern Piedmont District.

"The special agent who was shot today is doing well, I've been with him and his family and he is in good spirits," Hawley said.

Arrest warrants state that deputies responded to reports that White was randomly firing shots from a white Lexus on a roadway near a church, according to WXII.

The warrants also allege that White threatened a man with a gun and stole his phone and car keys. White allegedly threatened to shoot the man as well.

White was charged by the SBI with the following: attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and assault with a firearm on law enforcement personnel. He was charged by Rockingham County detectives with additional charges, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a firearm on law enforcement personnel, going armed to the terror of people, assault by pointing a gun, communicating threats, felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony discharging a firearm to incite fear, felony breaking and entering a motor vehicle, and felony larceny after breaking and entering.

He is being held at the Rockingham County Jail without bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday, October 5.
