NEW YORK, NY - A married homeless couple has dug in deep and set up shop (aka residence) in a New York neighborhood known to be a previous residence of Democratic Socialist Mayor Mamdani, and the NYPD can only stand by and watch.
It must be quite the sight to see… and smell.
It's been reported that the brazen homeless couple has been defecating and performing sexual acts on each other throughout the day. Do they think Mamdani is watching?
Anything is possible in New York City.
The couple has been living in a large pile of their own filth on the sidewalk between a pharmacy and a health club, shocking pedestrians throughout the day. They have claimed the stretch of sidewalk as their own, only needing to plant a flag atop their garbage mountain.
"I’m on the way to the gym, 8:30 a.m., the guy is squatting over a camp chair, and the other woman is holding a pizza box under him to defecate in,” Chris Shingler, a local resident, told the media.
What a loving wife.
Chris, 46, and his wife moved into the increasingly pricey neighborhood in 2007.
“This is primetime, work day, kids going to school, this is right out front in the middle of the sidewalk. My wife goes to the gym at 5:30 a.m., and she saw the woman performing oral sex on the man,” he said. “Tough way to start your day.”
Whether or not the NYPD even wants to do anything about it is unclear. We're guessing they'd rather not deal with it given the situation.
The cops have fielded several calls over the couple and their deviant behavior, but can't do much.
According to the NY Post, there needs to be a legal and coordinated action between law enforcement, human services, and the sanitation department.
No law enforcement action can be taken since they do not use any type of permanent structure for their encampment. NYPD can intervene if they have direct knowledge of a crime being committed.
The smell doesn't count.
Mamdani initially took a softer, outreach-focused approach to the homeless epidemic in NYC. His administration wanted to see an end to the encampment sweeps that were typically done in the past.
But he later changed his tune and reversed course on that idealistic plan after numerous people died over the winter due to frigid temperatures.
Being a happy-go-lucky, “everything is fine” type of mayor hasn't been as easy as you thought it would be, has it, Mamdani?
He has since shifted his approach to the homeless problem to adding in more enforcement, which requires the willful support and participation of the NYPD.
Will he get it? Considering his historical stance on law enforcement, we doubt it.
Well, New Yorkers, this is what you voted for.
