According to reports, a number of high-ranking officials from the New York City Police Department were present in Israel attending a training near the Gaza Strip when purported members of Hamas launched an attack mere miles away from the training center.

On October 7th, Israeli officials asserted that an attack from Hamas resulted in hundreds being killed and thousands wounded, with numerous reports labeling the gravity of the attack as “unprecedented.”

The history between Israel and Palestine is complicated, to say the least, having been engaged in spats of conflict dating back to the late 19th century, with said conflicts ticking up over the past 30 or so years.

The timing of the latest attack by Hamas apparently transpired in tandem with a law enforcement delegation covering counterterrorism and anti-Semitism training near the Gaza Strip, which members of the NYPD brass were among the attendees.

Members of the delegation had touched down in Israel on October 5th, mere days before the incident occurred.

Reports indicate that the NYPD officials were forced to seek shelter, considering they were roughly 20 miles away from where the initial attack transpired. The aforesaid delegation also included Westchester County officials, including a deputy chief investigator with District Attorney Miriam Rocah’s office.

District Attorney Rocah issued a statement on the evening of the initial attack, stating, “I am in communication with our deputy chief who informed me that though the delegation is close to the Gaza Strip they are sheltering in a safe location and every effort is underway for their safe return to New York.”

Rocah further stated, “While I am personally overcome with emotions about the devastation unfolding in Israel, I share in the gratitude I hear from our colleagues about their wellbeing and protection during their evacuation, despite wanting to stay for their week-long training.”

The attack reportedly launched by Hamas on October 7th saw approximately twelve towns in Israel seized, with numerous Israeli soldiers and civilians being slain and approximately 100 hostages being taken.

A report from CNN from the evening of October 8th noted that the current death toll in Israel is estimated at over 700, whereas approximately 400 Palestinians have been killed in retaliatory measures.

Tensions between Palestinians and Israelis have been mounting for literal decades, largely fueled by territorial disputes in the wake of the United Nations adopting Resolution 181 back in 1947, which laid the groundwork to several wars and the displacement of Palestinians.

Per officials in Israel, the country may seek to take full control of Gaza, a move that is likely to cause even more strife between Palestinians and Israelis.
