ESSEX COUNTY, MA - An off-duty North Andover police officer was shot and wounded during a confrontation with a fellow police officer who was trying to serve her with a restraining order.
During a news conference on Tuesday, July 1st, Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker said that 28-year-old Kelsey Fitzsimmons was shot once when three officers arrived at her home Monday evening to present her with a restraining order, the New York Post reported.
"When one of the officers was escorting Ms. Fitzsimmons during the service of the court order, an armed confrontation took place," Tucker said.
"As a result of that armed confrontation, one of the responding officers discharged their weapon, which struck Ms. Fitzsimmons."
Officer Fitzsimmons is a new mom to a baby boy and got engaged last year.
She has a degree in criminal justice and has served with the North Andover Police Department for about a year and a half. She was shot once during the confrontation, Boston25 News reported.
She remains in stable condition after she was flown to a Boston hospital, Tucker said.
At the time of the incident, Fitzsimmons was on administrative leave. Tucker declined to share further details about the restraining order against Fitzsimmons. The shooting remains under investigation by state police detectives assigned to Tucker's office.
