Officer ambushed, shot multiple times by suspect after cookie store armed robbery

MONROEVILLE, PA - A sergeant from the Monroeville Police Department (MPD) has been hospitalized after he was brutally ambushed and shot multiple times outside an apartment complex. The incident occurred approximately half of a mile from the site of an armed robbery that had occured shortly prior to the interaction.

According to reporting from CBS News, Allegheny County Police Superintendent Chris Kearns told the outlet that at approximately 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, Monroeville police were summoned to respond to an armed robbery at Crumbl Cookies near the Miracle Mile Shopping Center. Not long after, a sergeant driving eastbound on Monroeville Boulevard located the male suspect in front of the apartment complex.

Kearns told reporters, "As the officer was approaching in his vehicle, the suspect suddenly produced a handgun and fired multiple shots at the supervisor."

Court records obtained by CBS described the sergeant's injuries. He was shot multiple times and sustained at least three gunshot wounds to his left elbow and hip. Officers responding found that the sergeant's vehicle was hit with multiple rounds and investigators uncovered at least 16 shell casings and two pistols from the scene.

Officers located the suspect in less than a minute and took him into custody. He is being held on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and assault of a law enforcement officer by discharging a firearm.

According to a statement from MPD posted to Facebook, the sergeant is in stable condition.

Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole told reporters that this was the second officer-involved shooting in the last two months, as well as in the department's entire history. "I think nationwide, you're seeing a little bit of an uptick and we're seeing it here obviously in Monroeville and the eastern suburbs," Cole told CBS.

The officer injured in a previous shooting in November is still off the job, but Cole expressed gratitude for his officers' survival,

"I think somebody upstairs is keeping an eye on us, thank God," he added.

The suspect has refused to identify himself and is not cooperating with police. He was denied bail by a judge during arraignment on Thursday.

WTAE reported that when detectives interviewed the suspect he refused to give his name or any other information. He reportedly slipped his handcuffs from the rear to the front and removed his seatbelt several times while en route to holding and had to be removed from a police cruiser and resecured repeatedly.

According to The Tribune-Review, MPD has requested the assistance of the Allegheny County Police Department's Homicide Unit detectives.

These subjects must be restrained completely so there is no chance of their escaping. Secured to a solid object! Never in the front seat of the patrol vehicle either.

Find them my Brothers and if they fire at you, take them out! This assignation of Police Officers simply because they wear the uniform MUST be stopped! Maybe we can upgrade the charges to being a terrorist and it would become a death sentence to be carried out within 1 year of conviction.
