CAPE CORAL, FL - Two officers are being hailed as heroes for saving a man's life after lifting a vehicle off of him.
According to Fox News, 911 dispatched officers around 6:00 p.m. on Monday, October 30th, for a man that was reportedly trapped under his car. Once on scene, the officers determined that the jack the man had used to prop the car up while he worked underneath had failed, causing the car to fall on top of him.
Cape Coral Police Department (CCPD) shared a video of one of the officer's bodycam footage to its Instagram page. In that video an officer can be seen rushing up to the car, placing his hands under the wheel well of the car, and then lifting the car while shouting, "somebody pull him out!"
Together, Officer Bridges and Officer Klakowicz lifted the car off the man while another man helped pull him out from underneath the car. The man can be heard saying, "He has [a] pulse!"
The man rescued from underneath the car was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. He has since been released and is now back home. The man sustained seven cracked ribs and numerous other broken bones.
In a post, CCPD wrote, "Through the officers' quick response times and high levels of physical fitness, they saved a man's life."
According to WSVN, Carlos Romero was assisting his father-in-law, Francisco, with a car repair project in the driveway. As they worked on replacing the transmission cable, the only thing supporting the car at the time were ramps, which unexpectedly failed causing the car to collapse on Francisco.
As soon as that happened, Romero frantically tried everything he could think of, including using another jack to lift the car slightly in an effort to free his father-in-law from underneath.
He said, "Then I grabbed another jack from that car and that one was better. At least I had the car a little separate from the body." His father-in-law was unconscious and barely breathing just prior to the officers arriving on scene.
Mercedes Phillips, with CCPD said, "But, if that had continued to weigh on him like that, he probably would have lost his life." Romero said, "The doctors say it's a miracle that he's alive."
Phillips said, "It's like the Hulk lifting the car off of somebody. It's pretty cool and we're really proud of him."
