Online Support For A South Carolina Hero In 'Unimaginable' Crisis Nears Its Goal

HORRY COUNTY, S.C.-- Sergeant Chris Johnson of the Conway Police Department was badly burned and is currently being treated in intensive care after a fire tore through his family’s South Carolina home on Saturday.

A GoFundMe started for the family has begun to pick up momentum to aid the badly injured officer and volunteer firefighter.

North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue issued a statement via social media, asking the public to keep Sgt. Johnson in prayer according to ABC 15 WPDE.

The fire reportedly struck at 6:59 pm on Saturday, with Horry County Fire Rescue responding. The fire quickly spread, and officials issued a second alarm to bring in additional agencies.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation by Horry County Fire Rescue, and the Horry County Police Department is assisting, per the outlet.

A Facebook post by Katie Elizabeth, who states she is Johnson’s daughter, said that Johnson, who is also a 10-year volunteer with Horry County Fire Rescue has suffered burns to over 50% of his body and was airlifted to a Georgia Hospital where he is being treated on a ventilator. The Johnson’s home was described as “completely gone.”

The GoFundme page explained that,“In a tragic turn of events, he suffered a devastating accident and is currently receiving urgent medical care. If this wasn’t enough, his family also lost their home to a fire on the very same day."

"The weight of this loss—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—is almost unimaginable." the page went on to reveal."

"SGT Johnson has always stood strong for others, leading with courage, compassion, and dedication. Now, he and his loved ones need us to stand strong for them"

"While there have been signs of progress, he is still in the Burn Unit/ICU and as of last night experiencing serious pain, running a fever and feeling the weight of it all.”


As of this report, the crowdfunding site has raised over $29,000 on a goal of $35,000.
