CHESTER, PA - A Delaware County detective was shot Saturday following a pursuit of a man wanted for a separate shooting.

Around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, police located a suspect vehicle connected with a previous shooting incident. The vehicle crashed after leading police from Chester to Upland and back to Chester, near West 14th Street and Arbor Drive.

The suspect exited the vehicle after the crash and began shooting at pursuing officers. Police fired back, ultimately shooting and killing the as yet unidentified suspect.

Detective Steve Byrne was identified as the officer shot during the incident. He was shot twice in the stomach and transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center. He is expected to survive. Detective Byrne is a 16-year veteran of the agency.

District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said in a statement, "The police officer was trying to stop a vehicle that needed to be stopped from a prior incident. As he attempted to pull that vehicle over, the vehicle driver got out of the car shooting his gun, firing at the police officer. The police officer returned fire, the officer was wounded.

"We are thankful that our hero, our police officer is doing well."

So far, no further information has been released on the suspect.

This incident marks the third Delaware County officer shot in just 10 days.

Last week, two officers were shot when responding to a man shooting at least one person (an 11-year-old girl) and setting a house on fire, ultimately killing himself and five family members.

Those officers are both expected to survive, with one being shot in the left arm and one being shot in the leg.
