HAYWARD, CA - On Friday, October 25th, authorities with the Hayward Police Department (HPD) announced the arrest of a 25-year-old man for allegedly killing his father.
According to CBS News, the investigation began when officers were asked to do a welfare check on Wednesday, October 23rd, after the father did not show up for work and was not answering his phone calls. Police went to the 2000 block of American Avenue to do the welfare check. Upon arriving at the house, officers said that no one answered when they knocked.
While at the residence, police learned that the son was on formal probation that included a search clause, allowing the police to go inside the house. Police said that once inside, they did not find anyone, but they did find evidence of a shooting that they believed to be fatal. Based off the evidence they had, police suspected that the son, 25-year-old David Sanchez, was the person who shot the man.
Police continued to search for Sanchez and his father. On Thursday night, October 24th, police got a call from the Oakland Police Department (OPD) saying that they had arrested Sanchez for a separate incident. OPD also asked the Hayward police to do a welfare check at which point they were informed about the ongoing homicide investigation.
According to HPD, Sanchez told officers that his father was on the 3300 block of Central Avenue in Union City. Officers went there and found the man's body in a dumpster. Sanchez has been arrested on suspicion of homicide. The investigation remains ongoing.
In a separate incident, NBC News reported that a 15-year-old has been arrested for allegedly killing his parents and three siblings at their Washington state home. The boy called 911 afterwards to falsely claim that his brother committed the murders. The 15-year-old has been charged with five counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
According to police, two adults and three children were found dead shortly before 5:00 a.m. on Monday, October 21st, after a shooting was reported at a home in the Lake Alice Road neighborhood in Fall City, which is about 25 miles east of Seattle. The medical examiner's office identified the victims as: 43-year-old Mark Humiston; 42-year-old Sarah Humiston; seven-year-old Katheryn; nine-year-old Joshua; and 13-year-old Benjamin.
An 11-year-old sister was shot, but survived by played dead and then managed to escape through a window. She ran to a neighbor's house and was taken to the hospital where she was checked and then released. The 15-year-old boy was arrested the day of the shooting and is being held at a detention facility for juveniles. The prosecuting attorney's office said that the attempted murder count on the boy has a firearms enhancement, which allows for a greater sentence if the teen is convicted.
The surviving 11-year-old told police that her 15-year-old brother shot her and her family with a Glock handgun that belonged to their father. She told investigators that the brother shot her and then left the room and that she heard someone shouting "stop" and "help" before she escaped through the window. The evidence appeared to show that the suspect "systemically murdered his mother, father, two brothers, and sister, and attempted to murder his other sister," as written in the probable cause statement.
The statement added that the suspect "then staged the scene prior to the arrival of first responders" to make it appear that the 13-year-old victim committed the murders and died by suicide.
