BOSTON, MA - Authorities have confirmed that they are investigating a shooting that involved a woman and a baby in Boston late in the evening on Monday, September 16th.
According to Boston25News, around 11:40 p.m., officers responded to Stratton Street in the city's Dorchester neighborhood following a Shot Spotter activation. Upon arriving on scene, officers found a woman and baby suffering from gunshot wounds. Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said that officers found the victims outside in a driveway; both were rushed to different hospitals in the city.
The baby suffered life-threatening injuries, but the woman's injuries are non-life-threatening. Cox said, "This is a pretty heinous act in general, pretty cowardly. I can't think of any reason why somebody would want to shoot a female and young child for any reason, so we really need the public's help in this one."
Video from the scene show several officers and detectives scouring the large crime scene for evidence. Cox is encouraging anyone with any information about what happened to come forward with that and to give police a call. Since the incident happened outside, Cox is hoping that a camera somewhere captured something that can help police with their investigation.
According to CBS News, there are still no arrests and police spent much of the night searching the neighborhood for evidence. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said in a statement, "There's no possible reason for violence in our city, especially when it comes to young people and our very young children. So, I'm horrified to have heard of the news."
She added, "I know the police department is working through their investigation. They have good information, but are continuing to ask for the public's help and support and anything that anyone might have seen. These are now community members who will be impacted, families that are going to live with trauma and we are pushing out every resource that we can, particularly to make sure there's accountability in this case."
NBCBoston reported that police have not said if the two shooting victims are related or if the suspect shooter is known to them. According to WBUR, the scene of the incident is a short distance from 50 Ames St., where five people were shot just about a year ago in a courtyard of the housing complex. Two children were among the victims in that incident. All victims survived the attack, including a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the head and hospitalized for three months.
Chief Cox said that homicide detectives as well as trauma teams responded to the area of the shooting on Monday, September 16th. The names of the victims have yet to be released. Anyone with information is encouraged to call police at 617-343-4470.
