WASHINGTON, D.C.— In a surprise post to Truth Social Thursday afternoon, President Donald Trump announced his appointment of Judge Jeanine Pirro as interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. An acclaimed Fox News personality and Co-Host of ‘The Five,’ Pirro held roles as an Assistant District Attorney in Westchester, NY, County Judge, and District Attorney.
In his post to Truth Social, President Trump wrote, “I am pleased to announce that Judge Jeanine Pirro will be appointed interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. Jeanine was Assistant District Attorney for Westchester County, New York, and then went on to serve as County Judge, and District Attorney, where she was the first woman ever to be elected to those positions.
During her time in office, Jeanine was a powerful crusader for victims of crime. Her establishment of the Domestic Violence Bureau in her Prosecutor's Office was the first in the Nation. She excelled in all ways.
In addition to her Legal career, Jeanine previously hosted her own Fox News Show, Justice with Judge Jeanine, for ten years, and is currently Co-Host of The Five, one of the Highest Rated Shows on Television. Jeanine is incredibly well qualified for this position, and is considered one of the Top District Attorneys in the History of the State of New York. She is in a class by herself. Congratulations Jeanine!”
As reported by Newsmax, the President tapped Pirro to lead the largest U.S. Attorney’s office in the country after withdrawing his nomination of Ed Martin Jr., who met with pushback from key Republican Senators. The outlet reported that the “key Republican senator” stated he couldn’t support Martin owing to his defense of January 6th rioters.
Reporting from NPR indicated this unnamed Senator to be Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who told reporters earlier in the week, "We have to be very, very clear that what happened on Jan. 6 was wrong. It was not prompted or created by other people to put those people in trouble. They made a stupid decision, and they disgraced the United States by absolutely destroying the Capitol.”
Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office Trump explained, ““He’s a terrific person,” referring to Martin, adding “he wasn’t getting the support from people that I thought,” he added: “But we have somebody else that will be great.”
Martin had served as acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia since the days after the President’s inauguration in January.
Reacting to the news, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) posted to X, “Okay, let’s get Judge Jeanine Pirro confirmed as U.S. Attorney for D.C. We have no time to waste, and don’t want to give Judge Boasberg any chance to make the appointment.”
Senator Tillis concurred in a post to X, stating, “Jeanine Pirro has had a long and storied career as a prosecutor, and she is a great choice by @POTUS to serve as U.S. Attorney for DC!”
