WASHINGTON, DC- One-half of Connecticut’s contingent of loony left-wing senators, Chris Murphy (D-CT), is trying to insert an amendment into the Defense Authorization Act that would increase the tax on suppressors to $4709, Breitbart News reports.
Currently, the tax on suppressors under the National Firearms Tax stands at $200; however, under the recently signed “One Big Beautiful Bill,” that tax is going down to zero.
Murphy, who appears to be elevating his national profile in a move to run for president in 2028, has been one of the most vociferous anti-gunners in Congress, having parlayed the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 into a politically expedient means to push his anti-gun agenda.
Murphy never misses an opportunity to use the killing of 20 first graders and six educators at the Newtown elementary school for political gain.
According to The Truth About Guns, Murphy isn’t simply satisfied with raising the taxes on suppressors. He is also pushing for a $5 tax stamp on “Any Other Weapons,” which seems to be purposefully vague to tax all weapons, including handguns, knives, pepper spray, etc.
Murphy claims his motive is to “save lives,” when it is clear his motive is to appeal to the radical base of the Democrat party.
“If we want to save lives in this country, we have to find a way, come hell or high water, to stop mass legalization of silencers,” Murphy bloviated in a press conference.
Meanwhile, according to Guns.com, national gun control groups praised Murphy, including Brady United, a leading anti-gun group in the country founded by Reagan press secretary James Brady, who was shot during an unsuccessful assassination attempt against Ronald Reagan in 1981.
“Thank you, Chris Murphy, for introducing this critical amendment to strike the provision in the big UGLY bill that removed taxes on deadly silencers & other uniquely lethal weapons, and instead adjust taxes to reflect inflation today.”
Murphy’s amendment is likely to die a painful death, since Republicans control the Senate and President Trump would likely veto any bill that contains such a provision, if it somehow passed the upper chamber, where Republicans hold only a slight majority.
Moreover, Murphy cannot seem to gain consensus from his own caucus, since, according to USA Carry, Murphy’s bill has no co-sponsors or committee support.
According to YouGov, Murphy is the 51st most popular Democrat, finishing far behind even the very unpopular Adam Schiff. In other words, if he considers himself a presidential contender, he’s got a lot of work to do.
