On December 8, 2023, Mexico’s immigration agency said its agents detained two Iranians who they say were under observation by the FBI.

The National Immigration Institute did not say what the supposed FBI investigation was about.

The agency described the incident as a total of five Iranians who were detained along with their Haitian driver, who was acting as their guide on a highway between the Baja California border cities of Tijuana and Tecate on Wednesday.

It said their car was stopped at a toll booth because agents suspected they were going to try to cross into the United States.

There was no immediate confirmation from the FBI. However, there have been numerous public concerns of infiltration by unwanted foreign agents who can take advantage of the open borders of the country.

The agency said two Iranians were "under observation by the Federal Bureau of Investigations."

This is not the first time that Iranians have been detained at the border of Mexico and the US.

In October, US Customs and Border Protection also apprehended four Iranians in Texas, adding that they were considered "special interest aliens."
