SAN ANTONIO, TX - On Saturday, December 2nd, a San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) officer on bike patrol was struck by a vehicle in the downtown area of the city.
The accident happened around 11:00 a.m. near South St. Mary's and East Commerce Street. Police said that the patrol officer was struck while heading eastbound on East Commerce Street. The driver was reportedly following his wife, who was in another vehicle, and did not see the officer at the time of the collision.
Following the collision, the patrol officer was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. As of this writing, authorities stated that no criminal charges against the driver are pending.
According to KSAT, the crash on Saturday, December 2nd, follows two other recent incidents where officers were involved in being struck. In one such incident, a SAPD officer was hospitalized after a crash on the Northwest Side. That accident also happened on Saturday, December 2nd in the 6400 block of Babcock Road.
Authorities said that the officer was traveling south on Babcock Road when a white Mercedes-Benz leaving the parking lot of a bar nearby failed to yield before turning left. The officer's car struck the driver's side of the Mercedes-Benz. SAPD said that it is unclear if the officer had their lights and sirens on, but that the car was clearly marked.
The officer was taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries were he was listed in stable condition. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz has been identified as 30-year-old Brissa Acevedo. She has been arrested on charges for suspicion of driving while under the influence (DWI).
Less than 24-hours before that incident, another SAPD officer was hospitalized after a major crash on the Southeast Side of the city. That driver was also arrested on suspicion of DWI.
The crash happened around 9:00 p.m. on Friday, December 1st, near South Presa and Southeast Military after the officer was dispatched for a burglary in action call. A witness reported that the officer was driving west with his lights and sirens on and had a green light when the crash happened.
The driver, identified as 60-year-old Trinidad Huerta, was going east in a Grey Nissan truck when he cut off the officer while attempting to turn north. His Nissan truck T-boned the officer.
The officer was transported to the hospital where he was being evaluated for head injuries. SAPD said that witnesses said the officer was not alert after the crash and he was bleeding from his head. At the scene, Huerta was evaluated for driving while intoxicated. Sgt. Washington Moscoso said, "There was enough cues to arrest him for DWI."
There was a passenger in Huerta's truck who was also taken to the hospital as a precaution. SAPD has issued several warnings to drivers to plan for sober rides during the upcoming holiday season. Moscoso said, "This is something that could have been avoided."
