SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Authorities have confirmed that a juvenile suspect is in custody after allegedly shooting San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall during an attempted robbery on Saturday, August 31st, in central San Francisco.
According to the Associated Press (AP), 23-year-old Pearsall remains in stable condition at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center after being shot in the chest by the juvenile offender. During a press conference, San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said that Pearsall was walking alone shortly after 3:30 p.m. when the suspect attempted to rob him with a gun on Geary Boulevard in the Union Square area.
Scott, noting that more than one shot was fired, said in a statement, "A struggle between Mr. Pearsall and the suspect ensued and gunfire from the suspect's gun struck both Mr. Pearsall and the subject." Officers in the area responded immediately and provided emergency medical aid to both Pearsall and the suspect. The suspect was also arrested at that time.
Due to the age of the suspect, his name has not been released. However, he has been identified as a 17-year-old male resident of Tracy, California, which is about 63 miles east of San Francisco. As of this writing, his condition has not been disclosed. Scott said that a gun allegedly belonging to the suspect was recovered and investigators believe he acted alone. The police chief said, "This kind of violence is simply unacceptable in our city and we will do everything in our power to work with District Attorney Brooke Jenkins to ensure that justice is served in this matter."
During the press conference, Jenkins told reporters that ther office expects to make a charging decision by Tuesday or Wednesday and initially will file any charges in the juvenile court system.
In a statement, Mayor London Breed said, "This is how we hold people accountable in San Francisco. Robberies and any violence like this will not be tolerated in our city. This was a terrible and rare incident in Union Square and our thoughts are with Ricky Pearsall and his family. He has a bright future and I look forward to seeing him recover and get back on the field."
According to reports, it is unclear how many times Pearsall was shot or what the suspect was attempting to steal. Police are pulling video footage as they continue to investigate. Pearsall was stable enough to talk to police, but Scott said that investigators need to "go back and confirm some things." Scott said, "We have had extra officers in Union Square for quite some time, and we will continue to do that. Usually, when things like this happen, people get anxiety, and we want to make sure that the public knows that we're here for them. So, we will increase that deployment."
The 49ers have issued a statement saying that Pearsall was hit by a bullet in the chest and gave his condition as serious but stable. The team said, "We ask that you please respect his privacy at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family." On X, teammate Deebo Samuel wrote, "He's good. Thank God!!!!"
Pearsall was drafted in the first round in April by the 49ers with the 31st overall pick, but has been slowed by injuries since joining the team. He had been recovering from a partial dislocation of his shoulder, which was an injury stemming from his time in college. He began his college career at Arizona State and transferred to Florida for his final two seasons. The Niners hoped that Pearsall would contribute as a rookie as a backup to starters Brandon Aiyuk and Samuel.

The only reason they may do anything at all to the suspect is because he shot someone famous. If that had been a regular citizen they would’ve done little to nothing because CA doesn’t care about citizens other than collecting their tax money.
